San José (canton)
San José is the first canton in the province of San José in Costa Rica. It includes the national capital city of San José. The canton lies on a fertile plain at the eastern end of the Central Valley (Valle Central). The Virilla River and Torres River form the border on the north, while the Tiribí River marks the southern boundary. The canton encompasses San José city, composed by all of its districts, albeit partially Uruca, although the Greater Metropolitan Area reaches far beyond in all directions. The Mayor of San José Canton is Johnny Araya Monge (Partido Liberación Nacional). Geography San José has an area of km² and a mean elevation of metres. Uruca is the seventh district of the San José canton, in the San José province of Costa Rica. It is an important industrial and commercial area of San José. Commonly known as La Uruca, it's the second biggest district by area (after Pavas), and recognized as a heavily congested transportation hub. Catedral is a district of the San José canton, in the San José province of Costa Rica, it is one of the four administrative units that form San José downtown properly. Toponymy The district receives its name because of the Cathedral and the catholic Archdiocese of San José, the only archdiocese in the country which lies between its boundaries, along with several other government buildings. Geography Catedral has an area of km² and an elevation of metres. Catedral is on the center-east of the canton, and has a small portion of boundary with Montes de Oca Canton at its eastern part. The Central Valley () is a plateau and a geographic region of central Costa Rica. The land in the valley is a relative plain, despite being surrounded by several mountains and volcanoes, the latter part of the Central Range.
