San Jose Steam Railroad Museum
The San Jose Steam Railroad Museum is a planned railroad museum within Santa Clara County that has been under development by California Trolley and Railroad Corporation since 1992. This project was originally intended to be located at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds in San Jose, California; however in 2002, the Board of Supervisors voted to rescind support of the proposed railroad museum at that location. Since then, CTRC has been actively working with various public agencies for a suitable alternate site. The proposed location is near downtown San Jose. Lenzen Roundhouse The Lenzen Roundhouse consists of the six stall San Jose Roundhouse, turntable, water tower and herder's shack. The roundhouse was donated to the CRTC by Southern Pacific Railroad. Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport that transfers passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are incorporated in tracks. Southern Pacific 1215
Southern Pacific 1215 is a preserved 0-6-0 switcher steam locomotive. It was built by Baldwin in 1913, and it was primarily used to switch rolling stock in rail yards, until it was removed from the Southern Pacific's active roster in 1957. It subsequently spent thirty-seven years on static display in Hanford, California until 1995, when it was removed from display while going through a few ownership changes. As of 2022, the locomotive is owned by the California Trolley and Railroad Corporation, and No. 1215 is displayed in San Jose, California. History Southern Pacific No. 1215 was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1913 as part of the Southern Pacific Railroad's (SP) S-10 class. Caboose
A caboose is a crewed North American railroad car coupled at the end of a freight train. Cabooses provide shelter for crew at the end of a train, who were formerly required in switching and shunting, keeping a lookout for load shifting, damage to equipment and cargo, and overheating axles. Originally flatcars fitted with cabins or modified box cars, they later became purpose-built with projections above or to the sides of the car to allow crew to observe the train from shelter. The caboose also served as the conductor's office, and on long routes included sleeping accommodations and cooking facilities. A similar railroad car, the brake van, was used on British and Commonwealth railways (the role has since been replaced by the crew car in Australia). The California State Railroad Museum is a museum in the state park system of California, United States, interpreting the role of the "iron horse" in connecting California to the rest of the nation. History "Little Buttercup" was originally built in 1899 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an 0-4-0 saddle tank locomotive for the Santa Fe Terminal Railway as their #1. The SFT was a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, operating under the moniker of the San Francisco & San Joaquin Valley Railway, was designed to run a terminal operation in the China Basin around San Francisco, California. It was absorbed into the ATSF system in 1902, and SFT #1 became ATSF #2419.
