San Giorgio In Poggiale, Bologna
San Giorgio in Poggiale is a Baroque-style, deconsecrated, former Roman Catholic church, now serving as the Art and History Library of Fondazione Carisbo (the former owner of Carisbo), located on Via Nazario Sauro 20 in central Bologna, Italy. History A church on the site had been present since the Lombard era, but the present layout was designed by the architect Tommaso Martelli, and built between 1589 and 1633. The initial custodians of the church were priests of the Servite order. In 1798, the church and adjacent convent was suppressed by the Napoleonic Government. Till 1919, the street in front was known as Via del Poggiale. The Bell-tower was built between 1760 and 1763. With the restoration of the Duchy, the church was assigned to Franciscan Order till 1842, then to the Jesuits in 1882. It was partially destroyed during an aerial bombardment on September 25, 1943. Luca Antonio Bistega
Luca Antonio Bistega or Luca Bestega (21 October 1672 - 8 June 1732) was an Italian painter of quadratura, active mainly in Bologna, Italy. Biography He initially trained with a little-known painter, Barlamo Castellini, but soon moved to work with the team of Giacomo Antonio Mannini and Marcantonio Chiarini. In 1702–1705, he painted a large hall and various rooms in the Palazzo Martinenghi of Brescia. He returned to Bologna where he was employed in the Casa Agucchi. In 1706, alongside Gaetano Bertuzzi, he painted in the church of the Padri Camaldolesi of Faenza. In Piacenza, he painted alongside Marcantonio Franceschini and Luigi Quaini. Along with Francesco Monti he painted the main chapel of the parish church of Santa Maddalena, and then beginning with Giacomo Boni, and later with Giacinto Garofalini, they decorated the Church of the Celestini. Francesco Tadolini
Francesco Tadolini (1723 – August 31, 1805) was an Italian architect of the neoclassic period, active mainly in his native Bologna. Among his works are the facade of the Palazzo Malavasia (1760), the Palazzo Zagnoni, the facade and sacristy of the church of San Giovanni dei Celestini (1765). Giovanni Andrea Donducci
Giovanni Andrea Donducci (1575–1655), also known as Mastelletta, was an Italian Baroque painter of the Bolognese School (painting). His father was a maker of vats (''mastelli''). Born in Bologna, he trained in the Carracci ''Academy degli Incamminati'' at about the time when Domenichino, Lucio Massari, and perhaps Albani were there. He belongs to the generation of Carracci- inspired or trained painters comprised by Giacomo Cavedone (1577–1660); Alessandro Tiarini (1577–1668), Lucio Massari, Lionello Spada (1576=1622), and Lorenzo Garbieri. Giovanni Battista Bertusio
Giovanni Battista Bertusio (also spelled Bertucci or Bertuzzi; 1577–1644) was a painter of the early- Baroque period, active in Bologna. He trained initially under Denys Calvaert, then under Ludovico and Agostino Carracci. He married the painter Antonia Pinelli. Life and work He was born in Bologna on 20 May 1577: there is little information about his training and his career as an artist. His main biographer is Carlo Cesare Malvasia, who after telling that Bertusio was a pupil of Denis Calvaert, mentioned his training under Agostino Carracci. Bertusio also imitated the art of Guido Reni with unequal forces. The same source informs us that in 1602 he was instructed to read the funeral oration written by Faberio in the death of Agostino Carracci, for "a certain natural eloquence", a quality that certainly favors him in the teaching of painting. Enrico Haffner
Enrico Haffner (August 1640 – 1702) was an Italian painter of quadratura during the Baroque period, active mainly in Bologna. Biography Enrico was born to a Swiss father, who was a mercenary Swiss guard for the Papacy, stationed in Bologna; Enrico himself rose to become a lieutenant in the force. His younger brother Antonio Maria Haffner (born 1654) also became a painter. While it is sometimes said the Haffner brothers trained with Domenico Maria Canuti, they practiced of quadratura, and seem to have learned more from Baldassare Bianchi and Giovanni Giacomo Monti, as well as the influence of Agostino Mitelli. Enrico did travel with Canuti to Rome and painted in the church of Santi Domenico e Sisto. Emilio Taruffi
Emilio Taruffi (1633–1696) was an Italian painter of the Baroque period. He was a fellow-pupil with Carlo Cignani in the studio of Francesco Albani, then a pupil of the former. Active first at Bologna, in decorating the public hall, and next at Rome, where he resided three years, sometimes employed at Sant' Andrea della Valle and in private houses. He also conducted some altar-pieces, and that of San Pier Celestino, at the church of that name, yields to few of the same period.
