The San Francisco mayoral election of 1971 was held on November 2, 1971, with incumbent Joseph Alioto being re-elected with 38.6 percent of the vote, from among 11 candidates, there being no provision for a runoff. Campaign The three major contenders—Mayor Joe Alioto; Harold Dobbs, former member of the Board of Supervisors; and Dianne Feinstein, president of the Board of Supervisors—tried to outdo one another as advocates for law and order. Alioto challenged Dobbs to commit to keeping Police Chief Donald Scott and accused Feinstein of wanting to create a civilian review board to investigate police conduct. Dobbs would not commit to a particular police chief but did plan to appoint a new police commission. Jackie Gleason
John Herbert Gleason (February 26, 1916June 24, 1987) was an American actor, comedian, writer, composer, and conductor known affectionately as "The Great One." Developing a style and characters from growing up in Brooklyn, New York, he was known for his brash visual and verbal comedy, exemplified by his city-bus-driver character Ralph Kramden in the television series ''The Honeymooners''. Alvin Duskin
Alvin Duskin (1931 – July 25, 2021) was a San Francisco Bay Area educator, entrepreneur, and activist known for leading a series of campaigns in the 1970s. These initiatives included anti-highrise ads, a battle to stop the sale of Alcatraz Island to a Texas oilman, and an initiative that prevented the development of nuclear power plants in California. Duskin collaborated with journalists, activists, and ad-men in these efforts. Duskin was also recognized as the founder of the Alvin Duskin Company, a women's fashion label established in the 1960s. The brand achieved national distribution and funded many of Duskin's anti-war and environmental campaigns. Matthew C. Carberry (July 31, 1911 – May 1986) was the Sheriff of the City and County of San Francisco from 1956 to 1972. He was appointed by Mayor George Christopher after the death of Sheriff Daniel Gallagher. Joseph Lawrence Alioto (February 12, 1916 – January 29, 1998) was an American politician who served as the 36th mayor of San Francisco, California, from 1968 to 1976. Biography Alioto was born in San Francisco in 1916. His father, Giuseppe Alioto, was a Sicilian immigrant who owned and operated several fish processing companies.
