Matthew Carberry
Matthew C. Carberry (July 31, 1911 – May 1986) was the Sheriff of the City and County of San Francisco from 1956 to 1972. He was appointed by Mayor George Christopher after the death of Sheriff Daniel Gallagher. A moderate conservative, he was defeated in his bid for a fifth term by the more liberal Richard Hongisto in the fall of 1971. San Francisco Sheriff's Department
The San Francisco Sheriff's Office (SFSO), officially the City and County of San Francisco Sheriff's Office, is the sheriff's office for the City and County of San Francisco. The current sheriff is Paul Miyamoto. The department has 850 deputized personnel and support staff. The SFSO is a separate organization from the San Francisco Police Department. However, SFSO deputies and SFPD officers have all attended a POST-mandated police academy, and are duly-sworn California peace officers. The primary function of the SFSO is to operate the system of county jails where there is an average population of 2,200 inmates, and a number of individuals on supervised release programs. George Christopher (mayor)
George Christopher (born George Christopheles; December 8, 1907 – September 14, 2000) was a Greek-American politician who served as the 34th mayor of San Francisco from 1956 to 1964. He is the most recent Republican to be elected mayor of San Francisco. Early years Born George Christopheles in Arcadia, Greece, the son of James and Mary (née Koines) Christopheles. He and his family emigrated to the United States in 1910 and settled in San Francisco's South of Market Street neighborhood, then known as "Greektown", when Christopher was two years old. Christopher left school at the age of fourteen when his father James became seriously ill, and he became sole support of his family. He sold newspapers and became a copy boy at the ''San Francisco Examiner''. While working, he also attended night classes at Golden Gate College and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting. Daniel Gallagher (sheriff)
Daniel Gallagher (September 6, 1896 – May 6, 1956) was the Sheriff of the City and County of San Francisco from 1952–56. During his tenure he fought for prison reform and higher pay for women employees. Prior to being appointed Sheriff, he was a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. Richard Duane Hongisto (December 16, 1936, Bovey, Minnesota – November 4, 2004, San Francisco, California) was a businessman, politician, sheriff, and police chief of San Francisco, California, and Cleveland, Ohio. Early life and education Of Finnish descent, Hongisto was the son of Gladys Longrie and Raymond Hongisto. In 1942, Dick moved to San Francisco with his parents and brother Don. Dick grew up in the Sunset District, where he graduated from George Washington High School. He later attended San Francisco City College. While completing a bachelor's degree at San Francisco State University, Hongisto became an officer of the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD). The San Francisco Board of Supervisors is the legislative body within the government of the City and County of San Francisco. Government and politics The City and County of San Francisco is a consolidated city-county, being simultaneously a charter city and charter county with a consolidated government, a status it has had since 1856. Since it is the only such consolidation in California, it is therefore the only California city with a mayor who is also the county executive, and a county board of supervisors that also acts as the city council.
