San Francisco Fringe Festival
The San Francisco Fringe Festival, or SF Fringe, is a fringe theater festival produced by the EXIT Theatre in San Francisco. It is one of the oldest fringe festivals in the United States. It takes place over the course of two weeks every September. Performances featured at SF Fringe are chosen by lottery. The 2017 festival featured about 150 performances by more than 35 theater companies, performing in three small theater venues. Non Traditional Fringe Venues (NTFV) have included "bars and restaurants, on buses, park benches and trees". Many of the shows feature mature themes or nudity. Tenderloin, San Francisco
The Tenderloin is a neighborhood in downtown San Francisco, in the flatlands on the southern slope of Nob Hill, situated between the Union Square shopping district to the northeast and the Civic Center office district to the southwest. It encompasses about 50 square blocks, and is a large wedge/triangle in shape (point faces East). It is historically bounded on the north by Geary Street, on the east by Mason Street, on the south by Market Street and on the west by Van Ness Avenue. The northern boundary with Lower Nob Hill has historically been set at Geary Street. The area has among the highest levels of homelessness and crime in the city. The terms "Tenderloin Heights" and " The Tendernob" refer to the area around the indefinite boundary between the Upper Tenderloin and Lower Nob Hill. EXIT Theatre
EXIT Theatre is an alternative theater located at 156 Eddy Street, San Francisco, California, in the downtown Tenderloin neighborhood. The theater operates four storefront theaters and annually produces the San Francisco Fringe Festival, the second oldest fringe festival in the U.S. and the largest grass roots theater festival in the San Francisco Bay Area, and DIVAfest, dedicated to creating new plays by women writers. EXIT Theatre began in 1983 when the founder and artistic director Christina Augello directed a group of retired vaudevillians and method actors in two performances of a new play in the lobby of a San Francisco residential hotel. Cat Brooks
Cat Brooks is an American activist, playwright, poet and theater artist. She was a mayoral candidate in Oakland's 2018 election. Early life and education Brooks received her bachelor's degree from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where she studied theater. Career After graduating, she began her acting studying at the National Royal Theater Studio in London, before moving to Los Angeles and working at Creative Artists Agency. In 2002, Brooks joined the nonprofit organization Community Coalition, where she focused on issues of education and racial justice. After the shooting of Oscar Grant by a BART police officer, Brooks became active in organizing against police violence. She co-founded the Anti Police-Terror Project and served as the executive director for the Bay Area National Lawyers Guild. She also became an organizer for the Black Lives Matter movement. Elastic Future
Elastic Future is an experimental theatre company founded in San Francisco with the aim of making plays more accessible to a non-theater visiting audience. Founded in 2004, it moved to London in 2011. History Elastic Future was founded by creative director, Marc Blinder, and artistic director, Erin Gilley, with a founding team of artists including Josh Peek, Randy Sterns, Connie Hwong, Evren Odcikin, and Sara Razavi. Later the company added Wesley Cabral and Denmo Ibrahim. Elastic Future's use of Google Hangouts on Air to create digital theatre in Peek A Boo and Longitude, was described as "a world first" and "a brand new art form."
