San Francesco Di Paola, Venice
San Francesco di Paola is a Roman Catholic church in Via Garibaldi in the Sestiere of Castello in Venice, Italy. History In 1291, the bishop of Castello, Bartolomeo Querini, endowed the construction of a hospice for the elderly. It was erected on the left shore of the Rio de Castello and flanking this hospital, rises an oratory dedicated to St Bartholomew. In the second half of the 14th century rose a church dedicated to the same saint. In 1588, the church was placed on the Order of Minims of San Francesco di Paola, who refurbished, and in 1618 reconsecrated the church to St Francis of Paul. The adjacent monastery was suppressed in 1806, and razed in 1885. An elementary school now stands in its place. Art and Architecture The church has a classical facade with two orders and a triangular tympanum. A clock painted at 9:30 AM is on the facade. Giovanni Contarini (1549–1605) was an Italian painter of the late Renaissance. History Born in Venice, Contarini was a contemporary of Palma il Giovane. He was a great student of the works of Tintoretto and Titian and is declared to have been an exact imitator of Titian. According to an old story he was so extremely accurate in his portraits that on "sending home one he had taken of Marco Dolce, his dogs began to fawn upon it, mistaking it for their master". Contarini's work is extremely mannered, soft and sweet, but distinguished by beautiful, rich coloring and executed very much on the lines of Titian's painting. His finest picture is in the Louvre, having been removed from the ducal palace at Venice, and represents the Virgin and Child with St Mark and St Sebastian, and the Doge of Venice, Marino Grimani, kneeling before them. Marco Zanchi (born 15 April 1977) is a retired Italian footballer who played as a defender. Career Born in San Giovanni Bianco, Zanchi made his professional debut with Atalanta in 1994. He appeared in 19 games before 1996, when he transferred to Bari. He played very little in Bari, playing only 6 games before he was acquired by Udinese. Over 3 seasons there, Marco played in 42 matches. In 2000, he was on the Italian U-21 squad for the UEFA U-21 Championships. Iacopo Negretti (1548/50 – 14 October 1628), best known as Jacopo or Giacomo Palma il Giovane or simply Palma Giovane ("Young Palma"), was an Italian painter from Venice and a notable exponent of the Venetian school. After Tintoretto's death (1594), Palma became Venice's dominant artist perpetuating his style.
