San Filippo Neri, Recanati
San Filippo is a Baroque-style, Roman Catholic church located on Corso Persiani #44 in the town of Recanati, province of Macerata, region of Marche, Italy. History A church was founded here in 1665 by the Oratorians. An adjacent convent was built in 1708 through 1712. In 1722, this larger church was designed by Romolo Broglio. The brick façade is enlivened by white stone elements including the portal, windows, and bases and capitals of pilasters; it was built in 1771 to 1774 using designs by Pietro Augustoni, and an abundance of pilasters in the base. The interior has two lateral chapels with altarpieces depicting a ''San Carlo Borromeo'' by Andrea Pasqualino Marini, and the ''Madonna with St Joseph, St Teresa of Avila, and the Blessed Sebastian Valfrè'' by Francesco Saverio Moretti. Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. Recanati
Recanati () is a town and ''comune'' in the Province of Macerata, in the Marche region of Italy. Recanati was founded around 1150 AD from three pre-existing castles. In 1290 it proclaimed itself an independent republic and, in the 15th century, was famous for its international fair. In March 1798 it was conquered by Napoleon Bonaparte. The elongated historic center extends from one end to the other for over 200 metres and occupies an area of about 35 hectares. Its linear structure distinguishes it from most of the neighboring centers with a concentric plan, in which the inhabited area has extended from a central square. Along the margins of the central road, connecting the ancient housing clusters, there are numerous aristocratic buildings, for the most part on three floors, built by merchants or landowners. Andrea Pasqualino Marini
Andrea Pasqualino Marini (c. 1660 - after 1712) was an Italian painter active in the Marche region in a late-Baroque style. Biography He was born in Recanati, in the province of Macerata. He appears to have trained in Rome, either under Carlo Maratta or one of his pupils. In Rome, he also helped decorate Sant'Andrea delle Fratte with frescoes. Later in life, he returned to Recanati. Sebastian Valfrè
Sebastian Valfrè (9 March 1629 – 30 January 1710) was a Catholic priest and a member of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. He is called the Apostle of Turin for his long years of service to the people of that city, where he served as the provost of the local Oratory for many years. Life Valfrè was born in Verduno, then in the Duchy of Savoy, now in the Province of Cuneo in the Piedmont region of Italy. He was born to a family of poor farmers, but through struggle and effort he managed to attend various universities in the region, until he graduated from the University of Turin. Valfrè joined the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri in Turin on 26 May 1651, the feast day of their founder, St. Philip Neri, and was ordained a priest on the following 24 February. Francesco Saverio Moretti
Francesco Saverio Moretti (1800 – 5 May 1866) was an Italian painter active in the Marche region. He was born in Recanati, in the province of Macerata. He trained initially locally under Serafino Maritozzi, then in 1825, the priest Roberto Carradori of the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri patronized his enrollment at the Academy of St Luke in Rome, then under Vincenzo Camuccini. However, his main training was in the studio of Tommaso Minardi located in Palazzo Colonna. Pier Simone Fanelli (29 December 1641 - 1703) was an Italian painter active in the Region of the Marche, active in a Baroque style. Biography He was born in Ancona and died in Cingoli. His training is unclear. By 1665-1666 he was painting in the church of the Filippini in Recanati. By 1680, he was employed by the Cappuccini in Macerata. In Macerata he worked with Giovanni Domenico Ferracuti, a landscape painter.
