History During the second half of the 15th-century a Dominican convent was erected in the area. Giovanni da Cursu was prior by 1475. Around this time, a church was added. It is speculated that the patrons who brought the order to the town were the Moncada, the Aragonese feudal lords of the region. In 1566, Don Francesco Moncada, 1st Prince of Paterno, was buried in this church. The portal has a convex facade with concave wings. The baroque portal is flanked by stone pilasters, and surmounted by a broken tympanum. Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. Caltanissetta (; scn, Nissa or ) is a ''comune'' in the central interior of Sicily, Italy, and the capital of the Province of Caltanissetta. Its inhabitants are called ''Nisseni''. The House of Montcada (in Catalan; Moncada in Spanish and Italian) is an aristocratic and noble Spanish Catalan House with important ramifications in Sicily. Queen Elisenda of the Crown of Aragon was a member of the family. History The House of Moncada was started by Guillem I de Muntanyola or de Vacarisses (b. ? - d. 1040). Francesco Moncada de Luna, prince of Paternò (1510 –23 February 1566) was an Italian nobleman in Spanish-ruled Sicily. He was invested as the first prince of Paternò by King Philip II of Spain.
