Composition and chart performance In the lyrics, the protagonist of the song shows how frustrating his live act is. A German-language version of the song was also released around the same time as the English version, but it was not a commercial success unlike the English version which reached the top 20 in a number of countries across Europe. Michael Cretu
Michael Cretu ( ro, Mihai Crețu, ; born 18 May 1957) is a Romanian-German musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He gained worldwide fame as the founder and musician behind the musical project Enigma, which he formed in 1990. Cretu began a music career in 1976 as a solo artist and released numerous studio albums as well as writing and producing albums for his then-wife, German pop singer Sandra. He also worked with artists through the 1980s, including Peter Cornelius, Hubert Kah, and Mike Oldfield. Cretu was sometimes identified as "Curly" or "Curly M.C.", in reference to his curly hair and ''creț'' meaning "curly" in Romanian. Cretu scored an unexpected worldwide commercial hit with the debut Enigma album '' MCMXC a.D.'' (1990), helped by its lead single, "Sadeness (Part I)". ''Die Chinesische Mauer'' is Michael Cretu's third solo album, released in 1985. The literal English translation of the title is ''"The Chinese Wall"'', or as it is better known, ''"The Great Wall of China"''. Like his previous album Legionäre, this had German lyrics, was sung by Michael and was co-produced by Armand Volker. The album was separately with English lyrics and a different track listing under the name ''"The Invisible Man"''. Several of the tracks on ''"The Invisible Man"'' were edited slightly and therefore last for a different length than the German versions on ''Die Chinesische Mauer'' and sides 1 and 2 were swapped for a more commercial track-listing. The song Samurai was released as a single and became a hit in Europe (#1 Greece, #2 Switzerland, #4 Italy, #4 Sweden, #12 Germany), but its success was mostly with the English version. Richard William Palmer-James (born 11 June 1947) is an English guitarist, songwriter and lyricist. He may be best known as one of the founder members of Supertramp (playing guitar and songwriter); writing lyrics for several songs by the progressive rock group King Crimson in the early 1970s; and for writing lyrics for the 1985 hit "(I'll Never Be) Maria Magdalena" by Sandra. Palmer-James was born in Meyrick Park, Bournemouth, where he got his start in the music business playing in various local bands: The Corvettes, The Palmer-James Group (formed with Alec James), Tetrad, and Ginger Man, all of which included John Wetton on bass and vocals.
