Samuel Hunter (gymnast)
Samuel (Sam) Hunter (born 14 September 1988 in Nottingham, England) is a retired British elite male artistic gymnast. Following his retirement, Hunter was appointed as an elite development coach by British Gymnastics. Hunter was part of the first Great Britain team ever to win a medal in the men's team event, a silver, at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships in 2010. 2010 In 2010 Sam became the British All-Around champion with national squad teammate Daniel Purvis. At the European Championships in Birmingham, Sam was a valuable part of the British men's team who won the Silver medal in the team competition. This was the first time the men's team had made the team final. The British men's team went on to compete in the 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam where they qualified in 4th and placed 7th in the team final. European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships
The European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships are an annual series of artistic gymnastics championships for male gymnasts from Europe, European countries organised by the European Union of Gymnastics. History Originally held biannually and in odd-numbered years, the championships moved to even-numbered years in 1990. In 2005 a second set of championships was introduced, titled the "individual championships". Although numbered as a separate event, winners in either event are considered European champions, and the championships as a result have in effect become an annual event, but in two formats; in even-numbered years, a stand-alone men's event incorporates the European Junior Artistic Gymnastics championships (an entirely separate women's competition is held in the same years), while in odd-numbered years, the separately numbered 'individual championships' are held in conjunction with the women's competition of the same description, but without juniors, as a single event. ... 2010 European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships
The 29th European Men's Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held from 21 to 25 April 2010 at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. The senior and junior events are different. During the senior's qualification the top eight teams progress to the team final, and the top eight gymnasts (two per nation maximum) on each apparatus qualify for the individual finals. After the qualification for the juniors the team medals and places are awarded. Unlike the seniors in this event the top 24 gymnasts (two per nation maximum) compete in the all around final. Artistic Gymnastics
Artistic gymnastics is a discipline of gymnastics in which athletes perform short routines on different apparatuses. The sport is governed by the Fédération Internationale de Gymnastique (FIG), which designs the Code of Points and regulates all aspects of elite international competition. Within individual countries, gymnastics is regulated by national federations like British Gymnastics and USA Gymnastics. British Gymnastics
British Gymnastics, also known as the British Amateur Gymnastics Association (BAGA), is the sports governing body for gymnastics and Trampolining in the UK. History It was founded in 1888 as the Amateur Gymnastics and Fencing Association. Gymnastics had been adopted in this country, having been invented in Germany by Friedrich Ludwig Jahn, to improve the health and fitness of its soldiers. The rings, pommel horse, parallel bars, and horizontal bar were developed by Jahn. In the late 1800s gymnastics became popular for men thanks to the Army Physical Training Corps which was formed in 1860. Walter Tysall won the men's silver medal in the 1908 Olympics. After this time the Swedish form of gymnastics became more popular, a more artistic version developed by Pehr Henrik Ling which was for men and women, and needed little apparatus. Daniel Purvis
Daniel Scott Purvis (born 13 November 1990 in Crosby, England) is a Scottish former international elite artistic gymnast, and three-time British all-around champion in men's artistic gymnastics. He trained at Southport YMCA and was coached by Jeff Brookes and Andrei Popov. He was part of the first British men's team to win a medal at a World Championships in 2015. Junior career During his time as a junior he came 4th in the team for Great Britain at the Junior European Championships in Greece in 2006. Two years later in Lausanne he helped the British team win the gold medal, and individually won the all-around silver at the Junior European Championships again. Senior career 2010 In 2010, Purvis became the British men's all-around champion with Samuel Hunter. In the same year, he attended the European Gymnastics Championships in Birmingham, UK, and won a silver medal as part of the British team, and a bronze medal on floor. The 2010 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships was held at the Rotterdam Ahoy indoor sporting arena in the Netherlands from 16 to 24 October 2010.
