Samoan Democratic United Party
The Samoan Democratic United Party (SDUP) was the main opposition party of Samoa from 2003 to 2008. The SDUP was formed in 2003 from the Samoan National Development Party (SNDP) and the Samoan United Independent Party (SUIP). During the 2006 Samoan general election, they won 10 of the 49 seats, but one member lost his seat after an election petition ruling in August 2006. At the end of August 2006, the party announced it had a new leader, Asiata Sale'imoa Va'ai. The long-standing former leader, Le Mamea Ropati, had disputed the change of leadership. Following the departure of Ropati and his deputy Sililoto Tolo Tuaifaiva, the party dropped to seven MPs, and ceased to be recognised in the House. As a result, all its members were considered to be independents. Court action challenging the Speaker's ruling was repeatedly delayed. Samoan National Development Party
The Samoan National Development Party (SNDP) was a political party in Samoa, and the country's main opposition party between 1988 and 2003. The party was formed from a merger of the Christian Democratic Party and Samoa National Party in April 1988. At the 1991 election the party won 17 of 47 seats, and party leader Tupua Tamasese Efi lost his seat. They won 13 seats at the 1996 election. At the 2001 election the party won 23.5% of popular votes and 13 out of 49 seats. 2006 Samoan General Election
General elections were held in Samoa on 31 March 2006 to determine the composition of the 14th Parliament. The main contesting parties were that of incumbent Prime Minister Tuila'epa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, of the Human Rights Protection Party (HRPP); and the Samoan Democratic United Party (SDUP). In addition, three other parties, the Christian Party (SCP), the Samoa Party (SP), and the Samoa Progressive Party (SPP), competed in the election. The result was a landslide victory for the HRPP, which won 33 of the 49 seats. The newly founded SDUP secured ten seats, and the remaining six were won by independents. After the election, three independents joined the HRPP, increasing the party's seat count to 36. Asiata Sale'imoa Va'ai
Dr Asiata Alaelua Va'alepa Sale'imoa Va'ai (25 May 1945 – 2 September 2010) was a Samoan politician and lawyer. He was Member of Parliament for the territorial constituency of Satupa'itea and the leader of the Samoan United Independents Political Party and Samoan Democratic United Party. Asiata was the son of former Prime Minister Va'ai Kolone and the brother of Tautua Samoa MP Va'ai Papu Vailupe. He worked as a barrister in Samoa and New Zealand, before working for the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat in Suva, Fiji. Later he served as president of the Samoa Law Society from 1985 to 1987 and of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association from 1998 to 2001. Va'ai was elected to Parliament at the 2001 election, representing the constituency of Satupa'itea. Tuiletufuga Le Mamea Ropati Mualia is a Samoan politician, and member of the Council of Deputies. Over his career he has served as a Cabinet Minister, Leader of the Opposition and represented the constituency for Lefaga & Falese'ela for over thirty years. He was a founding member of the Human Rights Protection Party. Le Mamea was educated at Samoa College and later studied pharmacy at the University of Otago, graduating in 1970 to become Samoa's first pharmacy graduate. He worked as chief pharmacist at Cherry Farm Psychiatric Hospital in Hawksbury, New Zealand. He returned to Samoa in 1971 and became chief pharmacist at Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital in Apia. Leiataualesa Taupau Mulipola Oliva (born 1974) is a Samoan politician and former member of the Samoan Parliament. When elected in 2006 he was Samoa's youngest MP. Oliva was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Samoa as a Samoan Democratic United Party MP in the 2006 Samoan general election.
