Sammarinese National Alliance
Sammarinese National Alliance ( it, Alleanza Nazionale Sammarinese, ANS) was a national-conservative political party in San Marino. Its Italian counterpart was the National Alliance. In the 2006 general election ANS won 2.3% of the vote and 1 out of 60 seats in the Grand and General Council (+0.4% from 2001). Since 2008 it was part of the Sammarinese Union of Moderates together with Sammarinese Populars and stood in opposition to the 2006-2008 coalition government consisting of the Party of Socialists and Democrats, the Popular Alliance and the United Left. In the 2008 general election the party participated within the Sammarinese Union of Moderates coalition that won 874 votes (4.17%) and got 2 seats. The Sammarinese Union of Moderates was part of the centre-right Pact for San Marino coalition which won 35 seats out of 60 in the Grand and General Council in the Sammarinese parliamentary election, 2008 gaining 54.22% of the national vote. Sammarinese General Election, 2012
General elections were held in San Marino on 11 November 2012. The 60 seats in the Grand and General Council were up for grabs. The elections were held using the majority bonus system. The previous election, held in 2008, provided the Sammarinese Christian Democratic Party with the largest single parliamentary group. The Party of Socialists and Democrats, although winning more votes than the former, became the main opposition party. However, for the 2012 elections, the two parties decided to run together, under the banner of the coalition San Marino Common Good. They were joined by the Popular Alliance. Meanwhile, the remaining major parties formed the coalitions Agreement for the Country and Active Citizenship, politically placed in the center and on the left, respectively. Snap general elections were held in San Marino on 9 November 2008. They were called after the collapse of the centre-left government which had won the previous 2006 elections. In June 2008, due to disagreements within the coalition partners, the Party of Socialists and Democrats (PSD), Popular Alliance (AP) and United Left (SU), AP left the coalition and the cabinet fell down. The PSD tried to form a narrow-majority coalition with SU and Sammarineses for Freedom (SpL), but two dissenting members of PSD left their party and formed Arengo and Freedom (AL), leaving the proposed coalition without a majority in Parliament. United Left (San Marino)
United Left ( it, Sinistra Unita, SU) was a left-wing political party in San Marino. It was founded as a coalition on 2 August 2006, by the Sammarinese Communist Refoundation, formed by those who did not agree with the transformation of the Sammarinese Communist Party into the Sammarinese Democratic Progressive Party in 1992, and the Left Party, a split from the Party of Democrats in 2005. Its Italian counterpart was Left and Freedom. In the Sammarinese parliamentary election, 2006, the alliance won 8.67% of the votes cast and took five seats. The United Left was part of the governing coalition that governed San Marino from 2006 to 2008 along with the Party of Socialists and Democrats and the Popular Alliance of Sammarinese Democrats for the Republic until tensions between itself and the latter caused the coalition to disintegrate. The Popular Alliance ( it, Alleanza Popolare, AP) was a Liberalism, liberal-centrist political party in San Marino. The party formed a coalition with the Union for the Republic (San Marino), Union for the Republic for the 2016 Sammarinese general election, and following their electoral success the two parties created a new party, Future Republic. The Party of Socialists and Democrats ( it, Partito dei Socialisti e dei Democratici, PSD) is a social-democratic and democratic socialist political party in San Marino. It is a member of the Socialist International, and observer member of the Party of European Socialists. Grand And General Council
The Grand and General Council ( it, Consiglio Grande e Generale) is the parliament of San Marino. The council has 60 members elected for a five-year term. History From the fifth century San Marino was ruled by an assembly composed by all the family heads known as the Arengo. However, as population grew, such a body became more and more dysfunctional, with its functioning being crippled by feuds between families. While the exact timing is unknown, there is historical evidence that by the early 13th century the citizens of San Marino elected an assembly called Council of the LX, which was also known as the Grand and General Council. In this first stage the power was shared between the Arengo and the Council, with the latter gaining more and more power over the centuries.
