Sam Kelley
Samuel Lawrence Kelley is an American playwright and Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Communication Studies and Africana Studies, State University of New York College at Cortland. He has also organized the SUNY Cortland Gospel Music Festival since 1985. Education Kelley earned a B.A. in speech and drama from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff; M.A. in speech from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville; and the MFA in play-writing from the Yale School of Drama. ''Pill Hill'' is a three-act play by American dramatist Sam Kelley. Set in a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago known informally as Pill Hill, the play examines the failures, successes, and relationships of six African American steel mill workers as they transition from blue-collar jobs to white-collar professions between 1973 and 1983. The play is regarded as an allegory of economic progress related to the American Dream. ''Pill Hill'' debuted at the 1990 Yale Repertory Theatre Winterfest series of plays in progress, and was subsequently performed in several venues across the United States.
