Sam Grewe
Samuel Grewe (born June 10, 1998) is an American Paralympic high jumper. Grewe contracted osteosarcoma aged 13 which resulted in a pseudo-amputation procedure called a rotationplasty being performed on his right leg. Grewe jumped for the University of Notre Dame Track and Field Team, where he studied Pre-Med and resided in Fisher Hall on campus. As of 2022, Grewe attends the University of Michigan Medical School. Outside of athletics, Grewe is also a motivational speaker, including a TED Talk that he delivered in February of 2022. Early life Samuel (Sam) Grewe was born and raised in Middlebury, IN. He was a student in the Middlebury Community Schools system and attended Northridge High School, where he graduated in the class of 2017. During the basketball season of his 7th grade year, he began to experience a sharp pain in his right knee, which he originally attributed to growing pains. Goshen ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. Rotationplasty
Rotationplasty, commonly known as a Van Nes rotation or Borggreve rotation, is a type of autograft wherein a portion of a limb is removed, while the remaining limb below the involved portion is rotated and reattached. This procedure is used when a portion of an extremity is injured or involved with a disease, such as cancer. The procedure is most commonly used to transfer the ankle joint to the knee joint following removal of a distal femoral bone tumor, such as osteosarcoma. The limb is rotated because the ankle flexes in the opposite direction compared to the knee. The benefit to the patient is that they have a functioning knee joint to which a prosthetic can be fitted, so that they can run and jump. Osteosarcoma
An osteosarcoma (OS) or osteogenic sarcoma (OGS) (or simply bone cancer) is a cancerous tumor in a bone. Specifically, it is an aggressive malignant neoplasm that arises from primitive transformed cells of mesenchymal origin (and thus a sarcoma) and that exhibits osteoblastic differentiation and produces malignant osteoid. Osteosarcoma is the most common histological form of primary bone sarcoma. It is most prevalent in teenagers and young adults. The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern, most-practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form, and the current universally preferred method is the Fosbury Flop, in which athletes run towards the bar and leap head first with their back to the bar. The Parapan American Games is an international multi-sport event for athletes with physical disabilities held every four years after every Pan American Games. The first Games were held in 1999 in Mexico City, Mexico. The 2003 Parapan American Games was the last Parapan American Games that was not held in the same city as the Pan American Games.
