Sallee Snowfield
Sallee Snowfield () is a large snowfield between the Dufek Massif and northern Forrestal Range in the Pensacola Mountains, Antarctica. Mapping and name The Sallee Snowfield was mapped by United States Geological Survey (USGS) from surveys and United States Navy air photos, 1956–66. Named by Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (US-ACAN) for Lieutenant Commander Ralph W. Sallee, Assistant Meteorological Officer on the staff of the Commander, United States Naval Support Force, Antarctica, in 1967 and 1968. Location The Sallee Snowfield is between the Dufek Massif to the northwest and the Forrestal Range to the southeast. In the north it descends to the Ford Ice Piedmont. The Petite Rocks are in the east of the snowfield. A glacier drains north from the snowfield past the Davis Valley in the northeastern Dufek Massif to the Ford Ice Piedmont. The Edge Glacier extends from the snowfield into the Davis Valley for about . Rocks of the Dufek Intrusion are visible in the Dufuk Massif ...

It is bordered by Zumberge Coast of Ellsworth Land to the West and by Hercules Inlet to the Northwest. To the Northeast, circle of latitude 82°S is the dividing line against Coats Land. The area of Queen Elizabeth Land was unnamed until 2012, though most of it was unofficially known as Edith Ronne Land#Past name usage, Edith Ronne Land in 1947–68 and includes areas claimed by the United Kingdom, Chile and Argentina. It was discovered and photographed on January 13, 1956, on a transcontinental patrol plane flight of U.S. Navy Operation Deep Freeze from McMurdo Sound to the vicinity of the Weddell Sea and return, and named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Rear Admiral George J. Dufek,Dufek Coast, Dufek Head, and Dufek Mountain are also named for Dufek. U.S. Navy, who was in direct operational command of U.S. Navy Task Force 43 during that operation. The entire Pensacola Mountains were mapped by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1967 and 1968 from ground surveys and U.S. Navy tricamera aerial photographs taken in 1964. The organization's work spans the disciplines of biology, geography, geology, and hydrology. The USGS is a fact-finding research organization with no regulatory responsibility. The agency was founded on March 3, 1879. The USGS is a bureau of the United States Department of the Interior; it is that department's sole scientific agency. The USGS employs approximately 8,670 people and is headquartered in Reston, Virginia. The USGS also has major offices near Lakewood, Colorado, at the Denver Federal Center, and Menlo Park, California. Advisory Committee On Antarctic Names
The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN or US-ACAN) is an advisory committee of the United States Board on Geographic Names responsible for recommending commemorative names for features in Antarctica. History The committee was established in 1943 as the Special Committee on Antarctic Names (SCAN). It became the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names in 1947. Fred G. Alberts was Secretary of the Committee from 1949 to 1980. By 1959, a structured nomenclature was reached, allowing for further exploration, structured mapping of the region and a unique naming system. A 1990 ACAN gazeeter of Antarctica listed 16,000 names. Description The United States does not recognise territorial boundaries within Antarctica, so ACAN assigns names to features anywhere within the continent, in consultation with other national nomenclature bodies where appropriate, as defined by the Antarctic Treaty System. The research and staff support for the ACAN is provided by the United States Geologi ...

Davis Valley
Davis Valley is an ice-free valley just east of Forlidas Ridge in north-east Dufek Massif, in the Pensacola Mountains of Queen Elizabeth Land, Antarctica. It was mapped by the United States Geological Survey from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos in 1956–66, and was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names for Edward H. Davis, a construction mechanic with the Ellsworth Station winter party, 1957. Antarctic Specially Protected Area Davis Valley and other, adjacent ice-free valleys, forms one of the most southerly ‘dry valley’ systems on the continent and has exceptional scientific value for the interpretation of past glacial events and climate in this part of Antarctica. With Forlidas Pond some 500 m away, the site is protected under the Antarctic Treaty System as Antarctic Specially Protected Area An Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA) is an area on the continent of Antarctica, or on nearby islands, which is protected by scientists and several different int ...

Dufek Intrusion
The Dufek Intrusion is a mafic layered intrusion that was emplaced into present-day Antarctica approximately 183 million years ago. It comprises two outcropping sections called the Dufek Massif and the Forrestal Range that are thought to be connected beneath the Sallee Snowfield. The Dufek intrusion is associated with large volumes of Jurassic tholeiitic magmatism associated with the breakup of Gondwana. This magmatism stretched from northern Victoria Land to Dronning Maud Land and onwards into Africa and Australia. Stratigraphy within the intrusion includes the 1.8 km thick Dufek Massif section and associated nanataks. This massif section is composed of the 230 m thick Walker Anorthosite, with laminated plagioclase cumulates, overlain by the Aughenbaugh Gabbro. This gabbro consists of laminated plagioclase with and the augite-pigeonite pyroxene cumulus. The upper portion of the intrusion consists of the 1.7 km thick Forrestal Range section, with the Saratoga G ...

Foundation Ice Stream
Foundation Ice Stream is a major ice stream in Antarctica's Pensacola Mountains. The ice stream drains northward for along the west side of the Patuxent Range and the Neptune Range to enter the Ronne Ice Shelf westward of Dufek Massif. The United States Geological Survey mapped the stream from surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1956–66. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the stream in recognition of the National Science Foundation, which provided major support to the U.S. Antarctic Research Program during this period.
