Salinas Valley Samba
Salinas Valley Samba was an American soccer team based in Salinas, California, United States. Founded in 2004, the team played in the Western Division of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL), a national amateur league at the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. The team spent the majority of its history playing on the campus of Salinas High School, though they moved to Watsonville High School in nearby Santa Cruz County, for their final season in 2009. The team's colors were silver, black and white. History The Samba joined the Men's Premier Soccer League in 2004, one of five expansion teams for the league's second season. They joined along with the Albuquerque Asylum, the Sonoma County Sol, the Sacramento Knights, and the Idaho Wolves. During their first season of play, the Samba finished the league in 5th place, five points behind the Utah Salt Ratz, who ultimately finished the season as league champions. Watsonville High School is a high school located in Watsonville, Santa Cruz County, California, and is part of the Pajaro Valley Unified School District. The school mascot is Willy the Wildcat. The school colors are black and gold. Watsonville High School is a large school with over 2,000 students and staff, making it the largest school in the Pajaro Valley Unified School district. History Watsonville High School was originally a two-year high school course which was connected to a grammar school. The program met the standard for college entry requirements, as well as teaching Latin and Greek. In 1891, the course was extended to three years. Adam Smarte (born 9 May 1987) is a Liberian former association football, footballer who last played for Ventura County Fusion in the USL Premier Development League. Career College and amateur Smarte grew up in Elk Grove, California, played college soccer at UC Santa Cruz from 2003 to 2007, and played for both Salinas Valley Samba and the San Jose Frogs in the National Premier Soccer League. Professional Smarte was drafted with the first overall pick in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft by the San Jose Earthquakes. He was released by the Earthquakes at the end of 2008, having played just 3 games for the team, and subsequently signed for Ventura County Fusion of the USL Premier Development League for the 2009 season, where he appeared as a right-back in the defence instead of his usual forward role. Nate Northup (born Grinnell, Iowa) is an American soccer midfielder who currently coaches for the PVSC Exiles. College Northup attended California State University Monterey Bay, playing on the men’s soccer team from 2000 to 2003. He graduated cum laude in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in teledramatic arts and technology.
