The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, commonly known as the Sakharov Prize, is an honorary award for individuals or groups who have dedicated their lives to the defence of human rights and freedom of thought. 1979 Sakharov, provisionally designated , is a stony Vestian asteroid from the inner regions of the asteroid belt, approximately 4.5 kilometers in diameter. It was discovered during the Palomar–Leiden survey in 1960, and named after Russian physicist Andrei Sakharov. Discovery ''Sakharov'' was discovered on 24 September 1960, by the Dutch astronomers Ingrid and Cornelis van Houten, on photographic plates taken by Dutch–American astronomer Tom Gehrels at the U.S. Palomar Observatory in California. Survey designation The survey designation "P-L" stands for ''Palomar–Leiden'', named after Palomar Observatory and Leiden Observatory, which collaborated on the fruitful Palomar–Leiden survey in the 1960s. Julia Sakharova (russian: Юлия Сахарова) is a professional violinist. A native of Zheleznovodsk, Russia, she debuted at the age of eight with the Moldavian Symphony Orchestra. Her mother is also a musician. By the age of 11, she was already internationally known as a child prodigy due to her skills on the violin. At the age of 15, she won the top prize in the International Competition for Music of Eastern and Central Europe; Vladimir Spivakov, the head of the jury, presented her with his bow in addition to the prize. She attended Oberlin College, graduating in 2003 with a major in violin performance; she studied under Milan Vitek while there. That same year, she competed in the Concours International de Montréal des Jeunesses Musicales, and won sixth prize. Yuri Nikolaevich Sakharov ( ua, Ю́рій Микола́йович Са́харов; 18 September 1922 – 26 September 1981) was a Ukrainian Chess Master (1958), International Correspondence Chess Master (1971), and Merited Coach of the Ukrainian SSR (1963). Biography Yuri Sakharov was born on 18 September 1922 in Yuzovka (now Donetsk). His father was an official in the Donbas mining industry. In 1937 during the Great Purge he was arrested and executed. Yuri Sakharov became a "son of an enemy of the people." During the Great Patriotic War the Nazis sent him to work in a Belgian coal mine. When Allied Forces entered Belgium, Yuri Sakharov joined the US Army and fought against the Nazis. He earned a Purple Heart Medal. When his unit reached the Elbe in 1945, he was repatriated. Vladimir Vladimirovich Sakharov (28 February 1902 – 9 January 1969) was a Soviet cytogeneticist who studied mutagenesis by radiation with applications to agricultural and human genetics. He was a professor at the K. A. Timiriazev Agricultural Academy. Sakharov was born Simbirsk to agronomist Vladimir and teacher Maria Antonovna Ponyatovskaya, daughter of a Moscow physician. The family moved to Moscow in 1919 and Sakharov went to the Moscow State University in 1920 and graduated in 1926 after working at the Institute of Experimental Biology with a dissertation on “Novaya mutatsia u drozofily” (“New Mutation in Drosophila”) and “Razbor muzykalnykh genealogy” (“Analysis of Musical Genealogies”). Saint Sophrony (23 September 1896, in Moscow – 11 July 1993, in Tolleshunt Knights), known also as Elder Sophrony or Father Sophrony was an archimandrite and one of the noted ascetic Christian monks of the twentieth century. He is best known as the disciple and biographer of St Silouan the Athonite and compiler of St Silouan's works, and as the founder of the Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St. John the Baptist in Tolleshunt Knights, Maldon, Essex, England. Nikita Vasilyevich Sakharov (russian: Ники́та Васи́льевич Са́харов; 1915 in Gulya, Transbaikal Oblast – 1945) was a Soviet Evenk poet and prose writer. Biography Nikita Sakharov was born in Siberia in 1915. He began his education at a rural Siberian school, moved to the city of Chita to continue his studies, and came to Leningrad in the early 1930s to attend the Institute of the Peoples of the North. He began writing as a student. His best-known work, the 1938 novel ''Red Suglan'', described the initiation of collective farming in the rural north. Nikita Sakharov volunteered for the Red Army after the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. A decorated serviceman, he died fighting in Germany in April 1945. Sakharov's literary works were republished or published in Russian-language translation for the first time after the war, and much of his reputation as a writer is based on the literary research carried out in the post-war period.
