Saints Cosma And Damiano's Church (Alcamo)
Santi Cosma e Damiano (or ''Santa Chiara'') is a Roman Catholic church in Alcamo, in the province of Trapani, Sicily, southern Italy. This Baroque architecture, Baroque church was built around 1500 after the plan of Giuseppe Mariani and rebuilt between 1721 and 1725. Description The church has one nave and presents a tambour which inside repeats the shape of the main body with a hexagonal plan, while the chapels are delimited by some pillars in Corinthian style. Thanks to its restyling probably inspired by the Roman Sant'Ivo alla Sapienza, church of Saint Ives alla Sapienza by the architect Francesco Borromini, it became in 1725 an example of the most beautiful Sicilian baroque. Santa Chiara's nunnery Adjoining the church is Clare of Assisi, Saint Clare's nunnery and it was annexed during the years 1545-1547. Alcamo
Alcamo (; scn, Àrcamu, italic=no) is the fourth-largest town and commune of the Province of Trapani, Sicily, with a population of 44.925 inhabitants. It is on the borderline with the Metropolitan City of Palermo at a distance of about 50 kilometres from Palermo and Trapani. Nowadays the town territory includes an area of 130,79 square kilometres and is the second municipality as for population density in the province of Trapani, after Erice. Alcamo is bounded by the Tyrrhenian Sea on the north, Balestrate and Partinico on the east, Camporeale on the south and Calatafimi-Segesta and Castellammare del Golfo on the west. Its most important hamlet is Alcamo Marina at about 6 kilometres from the town centre. Immaculate
The Immaculate Conception is the belief that the Virgin Mary was free of original sin from the moment of her conception. It is one of the four Marian dogmas of the Catholic Church, meaning that it is held to be a divinely revealed truth whose denial is heresy. Guglielmo Borremans
Guglielmo Borremans or Guglielmo Fiamingo (1670–1744) was a Flemish painter whose documented career took principally place in Italy, in particular Naples, Cosenza and Sicily. Here he was one of the pre-eminent late-Baroque fresco painters of the first half of the 17th century who received multiple commissions to decorate churches and palaces.
