Sainthia
Sainthia (formerly Nandipur) is a city and a municipality in Suri Sadar subdivision of Birbhum district in the Indian state of West Bengal. The city is known as business city of Birbhum district. The city is under the jurisdiction of Sainthia police station. Sainthia is the fourth most populous city in Birbhum district and 95th most populous city in West Bengal. The city covers an area of 10 km2 and had a population of 44,601 in 2011. Located on the banks of Mayurakshi River, Sainthia has been a major human settlement. The city is famous for Nandikeshwari Temple, one of the Shakti Peethas in Indian subcontinent. Etymology It is believed that the name ''Sainthia'' is derived from 'Saaita', a term used in 'Khero Khata' (Business Book) by the merchants of Sainthia after worshiping Goddess Nandikeshwari in Poila Boishakh and Vijaya Dashami. Suri Sadar Subdivision
Suri Sadar subdivision is an administrative subdivision of Birbhum district in the state of West Bengal, India. Overview Starting in its northern parts with the Brahmani-Mayurakshi Basin, a sub-micro physiographic region occupying the area between the Brahmani in the north and the Mayurakshi in the south, Suri Sadar subdivision merges with the Suri-Bolpur Plain, another sub-micro physiographic region that covers the interfluves of the Mayurakshi and the Ajay. The plain area exhibits somewhat upland topography sloping from north-west to south-east. The western part of the subdivision forms the Bakreswar Uplands, an extension of the plateau region of Santhal Parganas. Nandikeshwari Temple
Nandikeshwari Temple, also known as Nandikeshwari Tala, is located in Sainthia city of West Bengal. This temple is part of the famous Shakti Peethas in Indian Subcontinent. Name The name of Goddess is derived from ' Nandi', the mascot and follower of Lord Shiva, and 'Ishwari' (Goddess), meaning ‘one who is worshiped by Nandi, the divine bull. History The history of the Nandikeshwari Temple is linked with the event of Sati's self-sacrifice at the Yajna Sabha of her father Daksha, because Daksha insulted Sati and her husband, Shiva. It is believed that the necklace of Sati's corpse fell here to form the Shakti Peetha when the Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Vishnu mutilated the corpse of Sati from the arms of Lord Shiva to reduce his rage. The Shakti Pitha or the Shakti Peethas ( sa, शक्ति पीठ, , ''seat of Shakti'') are significant shrines and pilgrimage destinations in Shaktism, the goddess-centric denomination in Hinduism.
