Saint Stephen's Day bandy ( sv, annandagsbandy) is a Swedish sporting event in which elite bandy matches are played on Saint Stephen's Day (December 26th). During the 20th century, it became a Christmas tradition in Sweden. History The tradition dates to the 1930s, when the two clubs IF Göta and Slottsbrons IF took to playing a Saint Stephen's Day Exhibition game. Despite initial objections by the Church of Sweden to scheduling the game on the Saint Stephen's Day, the event grew in popularity thereafter. Historically, only a few instances of the Saint Stephen's Day match marked the season opener for Elitserien, Sweden’s top division. Prior to 1957, Saint Stephen's Day was the date of the final friendly match, after which the season usually started on New Year's Day. Bollnäs GoIF
Bollnäs () is a Swedish locality and the seat of Bollnäs Municipality, in Gävleborg County, Sweden. It had 26,937 inhabitants in 2017 History The first recording of Bollnäs in writing is from 1312 when a vicar named Ingemund referred to it as ''Baldenaes'', meaning "the large isthmus," referring to the isthmus into a nearby lake. Before becoming known as Bollnäs, its name was ''Bro By'' (lit. Bridge Village). Bollnäs has a station along the Northern Railline (''Norra Stambanan''), which it was connected to in 1878. The town became a main base for further northern expansion of the railroad. In 1884, it became a primary maintenance and repair workshop for the railroad. The railroad was the largest employer in Bollnäs for the greater part of the 20th century, until the 1990s when it was closed due to its location being no longer optimal. Edsbyns IF
Edsbyns IF, is a bandy team from Edsbyn in Ovanåker Municipality in Sweden founded on 6 June 1909. The bandy section of the club was founded as late as in 1925 was formally made a club of its own on 28 June 2000. Edsbyns IF has played in the highest bandy league in Sweden from 1945–1969 and then again since 1971. History Edsbyns IF was founded in 1909. In September 2003, Edsbyn moved to Edsbyn Arena, the first indoor arena for bandy in Sweden, and won the Swedish Championship final in the end of the season. Bandy is a winter sport and ball sport played by two teams wearing ice skates on a large ice surface (either indoors or outdoors) while using sticks to direct a ball into the opposing team's goal. The international governing body for bandy is the Federation of International Bandy (FIB). The playing surface, called a bandy field or bandy rink, is a sheet of ice which measures 90–110 meters by 45–65 meters – about the size of a football pitch. IF Göta is a sports club in Karlstad, Sweden, founded in 1904. The club used to have a successful team in bandy, becoming Swedish champions six times, but now is only concentrated on athletics. Elitserien (bandy)
The Elitserien (literally, the "Elite League") ( sv, Elitserien i bandy) is since the 2007–08 season the highest bandy league in Sweden. It consists of 14 teams. The season ends with one final game in March. The final was held at Studenternas IP in Uppsala from 1991 until 2012. In 2013 and 2014 the final was played at Friends Arena in Solna, and from 2015 to 2017 it was played at the Tele2 Arena. The final returned to 4,600-capacity Studenternas IP indoor stadium in 2018. Season structure During the regular season the fourteen teams play each other team at home and away - a total of 26 games per team.
