Saint Sava Serbian Orthodox Church (Toronto)
Saint Sava Serbian Orthodox Church ( Serbian: Српска православна црква Светог Саве) is a Serbian Orthodox church located in the Cabbagetown neighbourhood of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is dedicated to Saint Sava, the first Archbishop of the Serbian Orthodox Church. It is the first Serbian Orthodox church built in Toronto and is commonly referred to as the mother church. History Bishop (now Saint) Nikolaj Velimirović blessed the Church Hall on September 5, 1954. The church was completed and consecrated on May 22, 1955, by Bishop Dionisije Milivojević. Princess Olga (sister of Russian Emperor Nicholas II) attended the celebration and banquet, donating an icon of St. Alexander Nevski made by her own hand. In May 2016, a car crashed into the church. The community of Serbian Canadians ( sr, Канадски Срби/Kanadski Srbi) includes Canadian citizens of Serb ethnicity, or people born in Serbia who permanently reside in Canada. Serbs (and Serbians) have migrated to Canada in various waves during the 20th century. Today there are five or more generations of Serbs in the country. The Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church is a Serbian Orthodox Church located in Regina, Saskatchewan. It is part of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Canada. It is located at 928 Eleventh Avenue and Winnipeg Street in Regina. It has the distinction of being the first Serbian church to be built in Canada, being built in 1912. The second oldest Serbian church in Canada is the St. Nikola Serbian Orthodox Church on Barton Street in Hamilton, inaugurated in 1917. The Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church is a Serbian Orthodox Church in Westmount, a suburb of Montreal, Quebec. The church is a parish of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Canada under the omophorion of Bishop Mitrofan. Background and history Serbs arrived in Montreal in the early 20th century. On 23 February 1954, Bishop Dionisije (Milivojević) appointed hieromonk Justinian (Ilkić) to the Serbian community of Montreal as their parish priest, the same year he arrived in Canada. Justinian Ilkić was a seminary graduate and former monk of the Monastery of Visoki Dečani in the Serbian province of Kosovo whose abbot was Dionisije himself before he became Bishop (1939) and took over the American-Canadian Diocese in 1940.
