The Saint John d'El Rey Mining Company was a British mining company that operated in Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries. The company employed skilled miners from Cornwall and elsewhere in Britain in its gold mines in the state of Minas Gerais, and also employed black slaves. Background The Nova Lima and Rio Acima quadrangles to the east and southeast of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, were an important source of gold in the 19th and 20th centuries. M. A. Hanna Company was an iron ore processing company located in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Origin The origins of the M. A. Hanna Co. are with Daniel F. Rhodes. In the 1840s Rhodes had founded Rhodes & Company which mined coal in the Mahoning Valley. Mark Hanna, the national Republican political figure, then married into the Rhodes family setting the stage for a change. It became Hanna Mining in 1885. In the mid-1860s the company expanded into iron ore mining in the area around Lake Superior. Incorporation took place in 1922 and was named as the M.A. Hanna Company. In 1929 the Hanna Company transferred its blast furnaces, coke ovens, and other materials to National Steel Corporation for stock in NSC. Das Velhas River
The das Velhas River ( pt, Rio das Velhas), is by length the major tributary of the basin of the São Francisco river. Its water flows into that river at a place called Barra do Guaicuí, in the municipality of Várzea da Palma, Minas Gerais. The source was found to be the Andorinhas waterfall located in the municipality of Ouro Preto. Origin of the name According to writer Aníbal Machado, this river is known to the amerindians as ''Uaimií'' and by the bandeirantes as ''Guaicuí'', from which the name Barra do Guaicuí for the place where the Das Velhas empties into the São Francisco River. In Tupi "gwaimi" means "old" whereas in Uaimii the final "i" means "river". "Rio das Velhas" means "River of the old women". Gongo Soco
Gongo Soco was a gold mine in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, to the east of Belo Horizonte in the mid-19th century. It was worked by skilled miners from Cornwall and by less skilled Brazilian labourers and slaves. Machinery powered by a water wheel and a steam engine was used to pump out the mine, operate the lifts, and operate the grinding mills where the gold was separated from the ore. The mine was closed when the gold ran out, but was later reopened as an iron ore mine. Recently the iron mine was also closed. Etymology The origins of the name "Gongo Soco" are obscure. One version is that when there was a theft in the mine a gong was sounded, but nobody listened. Another is that a slave from the Congo was found squatting ("soco") while burying a gold deposit. Slavery in Brazil began long before the first Portuguese settlement was established in 1516, with members of one tribe enslaving captured members of another. Honório Bicalho
Honório Bicalho is a community in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the municipality of Nova Lima. The Rio das Velhas runs through the community from south to north. Railway The Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil was the first railway line to be built by the emperor Pedro II of Brazil, and was a backbone of the Brazilian railway system. The first stretch was opened in 1858. The Honório Bicalho station was opened in 1890, named after the engineer Honório Bicalho, who was involved in various public works on ports and railways. The station has been abandoned, although the tracks remain. The station was demolished in the late 1990s.
