The Rampe de Laffrey (sometimes called the descente de Laffrey or the côte de Laffrey) is a section of France's Route nationale 85, today called the '' Route Napoléon'', in the department of Isère between the communes of Laffrey and Vizille, about 15 kilometers southeast of Grenoble. This steep and mostly relatively straight section of road ends in a sharp turn, and it is known for the high number of fatal accidents that have occurred in this final curve. Four of them, in 1946, 1973, 1975, and 2007, involved buses of pilgrims returning from Notre Dame de la Salette, and are among the deadliest in French history. Design of the ramp The slope begins in the center of the village of Laffrey at a height of 910 meters, right on the edge of the Matheysine plateau. The Vercors Massif is a range in France consisting of rugged plateaus and mountains straddling the ''départements'' of Isère and Drôme in the French Prealps. It lies west of the Dauphiné Alps, from which it is separated by the rivers Drac and Isère. The cliffs at the massif's eastern limit face the city of Grenoble. Taillefer
Taillefer (, meaning "hewer of iron") was the surname of a Norman ''jongleur'' (minstrel), whose exact name and place of birth are unknown (sometimes his first name is given as "Ivo"). He travelled to England during the Norman conquest of England of 1066, in the train of William the Conqueror. At the Battle of Hastings, Taillefer sang the ''Chanson de Roland'' at the English troops while juggling with his sword. An English soldier ran out to challenge him and was killed by Taillefer, who then charged the English lines alone while singing and was engulfed, killing at least four more English in the process. Strangely, Taillefer is not depicted, by name at least, on the Bayeux Tapestry.
