Saint-Malachie, Quebec
Saint-Malachie is a village of about 1,500 people in the Bellechasse Regional County Municipality, part of the Chaudière-Appalaches administrative region. The Etchemin River goes through the municipality. History St. Malachie was colonized by the Irish and Scottish shortly after the War of 1812. The land was given to several British soldiers in the eastern part of the township of Frampton along the Etchemin River. The land was then given to Gilbert Henderson (1785-1876) who later became the major landowner in this area. The first settlers came mostly from Armagh, a religious town in Northern Ireland. The town was named St. Malachy after the Arch Bishop of Armagh. The town was civilly erected in 1874, and would later give its name to the municipality of Saint-Malachi-de-Frampton (Frampton Township), but changed once more to St. Malachie in 1948. Frampton, Quebec
Frampton is a municipality in La Nouvelle-Beauce Regional County Municipality in the Chaudière-Appalaches administrative region of Quebec. After the War of 1812, in the time of land grants were given to soldiers in the region as reward for their service to the British Crown. Brothers William and Gilbert Henderson, originally of the Shetland Islands, and Pierre-Edouard Desbarats, partnered in developing Frampton Township along with the surrounding towns of Saint-Malachie, where both Henderson brothers are buried, and Standon Township. The towns grew with the influx of Irish immigrants to Canada after the war. It is said that the well-read William Henderson gave the town the name Frampton in honour of Mary Frampton, an author in England from that period. Lac-Etchemin, Quebec
Lac-Etchemin is a municipality in and the seat of the Municipalité régionale de comté des Etchemins in Quebec, Canada. It is part of the Chaudière-Appalaches region and the population is 4,028 as of 2021. It takes its name from Etchemin Lake, at the centre of the municipality. "Etchemin" means "men, human beings" in Abenaki language. Lac-Etchemin is home to winter resort Mont Orignal and the birthplace of controversial religious Community of the Lady of All Nations. The 2021 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population with a reference date of May 11, 2021. It follows the 2016 Canadian census, which recorded a population of 35,151,728. The overall response rate was 98%, which is slightly lower than the response rate for the 2016 census. It recorded a population of 36,991,981, a 5.2% increase from 2016. Planning Consultation on census program content was from September 11 to December 8, 2017. The census was conducted by Statistics Canada, and was contactless as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada. The agency had considered delaying the census until 2022. Etchemin River
The Etchemin River is a river in the Chaudière-Appalaches region of eastern Quebec. It gave its name to Les Etchemins Regional County Municipality. The river itself was named for the Abenaki native people of the area who the French called "les Etchemins." The source of the river is not Etchemin Lake but a little east of the lake, in Saint-Luc-de-Bellechasse. The Etchemin River, which had become been the victim of pollution for decades, became the topic of conversation in 1993, when a few residents of Saint-Léon-de-Standon began work on a project to revive the Atlantic salmon in the river. The project was scoffed at in the beginning since damming and logging along the Etchemin's shore and agricultural runoff and dumping had polluted the river so much that Atlantic salmon had been last seen there two centuries earlier.
