Saint-Cast-le-Guildo
Saint-Cast-le-Guildo (; br, Sant-Kast-ar-Gwildoù; Gallo: ''Saent-Cast-le-Giledo'') is a commune in the Côtes-d'Armor department of Brittany in northwestern France. It is port city on the English Channel as it also has a nautical center, the Centre Nautique de Saint-Cast (CNSC) ranked 3rd to 6th in the nation. The river Arguenon flows through the commune, where it empties into the sea. History The Battle of St Cast took place on September 11, 1758, when the French repelled the English. The English first attacked the region of Dinard by sea, but were stopped at the Rance by the Vauban fortifications. They were forced to retreat to their fleet in front of St-Cast, where Emmanuel-Armand de Richelieu was waiting for them and launched an attack on the beach while the British were fleeing back onto their vessels. Lucienne Heuvelmans
Lucienne Heuvelmans (1885–1944) was a French sculptor and illustrator. Her life She was born in the 12th arrondissement of Paris on December 25, 1881 or 1885, the daughter of Osval Heuvelmans, a designer and cabinetmaker from Ath, and Donatilde Sandra, a milliner from Leuze-en-Hainaut. These two cities in Hainaut, Belgium, still preserve works of the artist: a bronze Christ in the museum of history and archeology of Ath and a Pax Armata on the monument to the dead of Leuze. After attending evening classes in sculpture, Heuvelmans was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts in 1904. She studied under the sculptors Laurent Marqueste, Emmanuel Hannaux (fr), and Denys Puech. After an unsuccessful bid in 1908, receiving the first second Grand Prix in 1910, Heuvelmans became the first woman to win the Grande Prix de Rome for sculpture in July 1911 for her work, ''The Sister of Orestes Guarding Her Brother's Sleep''. Arguenon
The Arguenon (; br, Argenon) is a French coastal river in the Côtes-d'Armor department of the Brittany region. It flows into the English Channel. Geography The length of the watercourse is . The river rises in the commune of Le Gouray in Côtes-d'Armor and flows into the sea near Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer, in the commune of Créhen, in the Bay of Arguenon. The Arguenon is very wide between Jugon-les-Lacs and Plorec-sur-Arguenon. Anne Beaumanoir
Anne Beaumanoir (30 October 1923 – 4 March 2022) was a French neurophysiologist. For her aid to Jews in Brittany during the Second World War, she as well as her parents were recognised as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem. A militant communist who was involved with the French Resistance during the Second World War, she was imprisoned for supporting the FLN in the Algerian War. Battle Of St Cast
The Battle of Saint Cast was a military engagement during the Seven Years' War on the French coast between British naval and land expeditionary forces and French coastal defence forces. Fought on 11 September 1758, it was won by the French. During the Seven Years' War, Britain mounted numerous amphibious expeditions against France and French possessions around the world. In 1758 a number of expeditions, then called ''Descents'', were made against the northern coast of France. The military objectives of the descents were to capture and destroy French ports, divert French land forces from Germany, and suppress privateers operating from the French coast. Irène Aïtoff (30 July 1904 – 5 June 2006) was a French pianist and vocal coach. Biography Born in Saint-Cast ( Côtes-d'Armor), Aïtoff was admitted in the Conservatoire de Paris after having been introduced to Alfred Cortot. She was quickly recognized in musical circles as an excellent pianist, but did not make a concert career. From 1932 to 1939, she accompanied the singer Yvette Guilbert with whom she discovered that "French singing is inseparable from the text." Therefore, diction was essential for her. From 1940, her name was often associated with that of the great conductor Charles Munch, of whom she became an important collaborator, known for her ability to teach singers their role, to reduce or transpose orchestral scores. Kouign-amann
Kouign-amann (; ''kouignoù-amann'') is a sweet Breton cake, made with laminated dough. It is a round multi-layered cake, originally made with bread dough (nowadays sometimes viennoiserie dough), containing layers of butter and incorporated sugar, similar in fashion to puff pastry, albeit with fewer layers. The cake is slowly baked until the sugar caramelizes and the recipe's butter (in fact the steam of the 20 percent water in the butter) expands the dough, resulting in its layered structure. A smaller version, “kouignette”, is similar to a muffin-shaped, caramelized croissant. A specialty of the town of Douarnenez in Finistère, Brittany, where it originated around 1860, the pastry is attributed to Yves-René Scordia (1828–1878). Köppen Climate Classification
The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Later, the climatologist Rudolf Geiger (1894–1981) introduced some changes to the classification system, which is thus sometimes called the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system.
