Sailing At The 1988 Summer Olympics – Flying Dutchman
The Flying Dutchman was a sailing event on the Sailing at the 1988 Summer Olympics program in Pusan, South Korea. Seven races were scheduled. 44 sailors, on 22 boats, from 22 nations competed. The second race falling on the Jewish most holy day of the "Yom Kipur" prevented the Israeli duo Sela and Amir from sailing thus pushing them out of the medals. David Wilkins (sailor)
David Wilkins (born 30 April 1950 in Malahide, County Dublin) is an Irish sailor who competed at five Olympics between 1972 and 1992, winning silver in 1980. He won a silver medal in sailing for Ireland with partner James Wilkinson at the 1980 Moscow Olympics in the Flying Dutchman class. The sailing events took place at Pirita Yachting Club in Tallinn, Estonia. He is the first Irish sportsperson to compete at five Olympics. Neal McDonald
Neal McDonald (born 22 July 1963) is a British sailor who has competed in seven Volvo Ocean Races. Sailing career Born in Brighton, McDonald is a qualified naval architect and a member of the Royal Corps of Naval Constructors. He represented Great Britain at the 1988 Summer Olympics, sailing a Flying Dutchman with Roger Yeoman. They placed sixth in the event. He then won the 1989 International 14 World Championship with his brother, Duncan McDonald before campaigning in the 49er class, becoming European Champion. McDonald first sailed in the Whitbread Round the World Race during the 1993-94 event on ''Fortuna''. The boat broke its mast twice in the first 24 hours of the race, and ended up retiring.
