Safmarine, short for South African Marine Container Lines N.V.'','' is a South African international shipping entity and former company offering container and break-bulk shipping services worldwide. It is now owned by its parent company Maersk Line. History The company was founded in June 1946 by South African industrialists and American ship owners with three American wartime Victory ships. In 1950 it came under American control but in 1959, the Industrial Development Corporation help finance its repurchase and returned it to South African control. It would sell its holding 1984. Safmarine is now widely known as a north/south trade and African specialist. The line is represented in more than 130 countries throughout the world, with more than 1200 sailors selling their services. Maersk Line or Maersk SeaLand is a Danish international container shipping company and the largest operating subsidiary of the Maersk Group, a Danish business conglomerate. ''Pretoria Castle'' (later ''S.A. Oranje'') was an ocean liner operated by the Union-Castle Line in service between Britain and South Africa during the mid 20th century. She was built by Harland and Wolff of Belfast at a cost of £2.5 million, and was launched on 19 August 1947, with her christening performed by the wife of South African Prime Minister Jan Smuts. She made her maiden voyage in July 1948. In 1953, she was present for the fleet review as part of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. She was refit twice in the mid 1960s, with modifications externally to her masts and internally with the addition of air conditioning and added private bathrooms. Union-Castle Line
The Union-Castle Line was a British shipping line that operated a fleet of passenger liners and cargo ships between Europe and Africa from 1900 to 1977. It was formed from the merger of the Union Line and Castle Shipping Line. It merged with Bullard King and Clan Line in 1956 to form British & Commonwealth Shipping, and then with South African Marine Corporation (commonly referred to as Safmarine) in 1973 to create International Liner Services, but maintained its separate identity throughout. The Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB) is one of the oldest Antwerp ship-owners. It is controlled by the Saverys family who also own major stakes in the Exmar and Euronav groups. History CMB was founded in 1895 under the name Compagnie Belge Maritime du Congo (CBMC). At the request of Leopold II of Belgium and with support from British investors, a maritime connection was opened with Congo Free State.
