Australian Safeway Pty Ltd (trading as Safeway Supermarkets) was a chain of supermarkets in Australia from 1963 to 2017. The supermarkets were initially part of Safeway Inc. but were absorbed by Woolworths Limited (now Woolworths Group) in 1985. On 22 August 2008, Woolworths Limited announced it would discontinue the Safeway name, and former Safeway stores were rebranded to Woolworths or closed. The final Safeway store to be rebranded was Wodonga, occurring on 6 June 2017. Bayside Shopping Centre is a super regional shopping centre in the suburb of Frankston on the Mornington Peninsula of Melbourne. Transport The Frankston railway line offers frequent train services to Frankston station located five minutes away from Bayside Shopping Centre. Forest Hill is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 18 km east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Whitehorse local government area. Karingal is a local area within the suburb of Frankston located in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia. It is in the local government area of the City of Frankston (app. 45 km South East from the Melbourne CBD) History European settlement of the area now known as Karingal is recorded as far back as the 1840s. Agricultural and pastoral land use continued in the area into the 1960s, when residential development spread from Frankston East into this locality. Belgrave is a town and outer suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 36 km east of Melbourne's central business district, located within the Shire of Yarra Ranges local government area. Belgrave recorded a population of 3,894 at the 2021 census. History Belgrave is situated in the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, part of the land of the Wurundjeri first nations people. Belgrave was first settled by Europeans in 1851. Belgrave was named after an 1840s chapel in Leeds, Yorkshire, England; the name was carried by Mr and Mrs R.G. Peter Magowan
Peter Alden Magowan (April 5, 1942 – January 27, 2019) was an American businessman. He was the managing general partner of the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball from 1993 to 2008. He was the chief executive officer of Safeway Inc. from 1979 through 1993. Early life and career Magowan was born in New York City in 1942. Food For Less was an Australian discount supermarket chain owned by Woolworths Limited. It was originally established in Queensland, where a discount 'food barn' chain operating as "Jack the Slasher" was acquired by Safeway USA and when Woolworths took over Safeway in 1990. The stores were positioned as low-cost locations that sold dry groceries and frozen perishables. It later expanded into New South Wales and became the low-cost supermarket chain for Woolworths, competing with Franklins No Frills, Coles Myer's Bi-Lo and Aldi. The chain expanded when Woolworths purchased the Franklins stores in New South Wales and Queensland, and converted them to the Food For Less brand. In 2010 Woolworths began to shut down the brand.
