Sacred Heart Church, Glasgow
The Sacred Heart Church is a Catholic parish church in the Bridgeton area of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated on Old Dalmarnock Road. It is a category A listed building. History The church was first built in 1909–10. The architect was Charles Ménart. The Presbytery (1890) was designed by Pugin and Pugin. Later alterations (1953-4) were by Gillespie, Kidd & Coia including fresco restoration by William Crosbie. The style is Baroque Revival with predominantly rock-faced red ashlar. William Crosbie (artist)
William (Bill) Crosbie (31 January 1915 – 15 January 1999) was a Scottish painter. His work hangs in all major museums and galleries in Scotland and is part of the Royal Collection. Early life Crosbie was born in Hankow, China of Scottish parents. The family returned to Glasgow in 1926, where Bill attended Glasgow Academy and, from 1932 to 1934, the Glasgow School of Art. On leaving art school he travelled in Europe on a Haldane Travelling Scholarship. From 1937 to 1939 Crosbie lived in Paris, where he studied under Léger and Maillol. He describing his time in Leger's studio as ''one of my proudest experiences''. Work He was at the centre of what he once described as "a little local Renaissance", which included Hugh MacDiarmid, J D Fergusson, James Bridie, T J Honeyman, and Basil Spence. Mass (Catholic Church)
The Mass is the central liturgical service of the Eucharist in the Catholic Church, in which bread and wine are consecrated and become the body and blood of Christ. As defined by the Church at the Council of Trent, in the Mass, "the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross, is present and offered in an unbloody manner". The Church describes the Mass as the "source and summit of the Christian life". Thus the Church teaches that the Mass is a sacrifice. Gillespie, Kidd & Coia
Gillespie, Kidd & Coia was a Scottish architectural firm famous for their application of modernism in churches and universities, as well as at St Peter's Seminary in Cardross. Though founded in 1927, they are best known for their work in the post-war period. The firm was wound up in 1987. In 2007, the firm was the subject of a major retrospective exhibition at The Lighthouse, Glasgow. History of the practice Origins The Scottish architect James Salmon (1805–1888) established a practice in Glasgow in 1830. John Gaff Gillespie (1870–1926) was hired in 1891, when the practice was known as James Salmon & Son, and was run by the son, William Forrest Salmon. The practice name was changed in 1903 to Salmon & Son & Gillespie, with James Salmon (1873–1924), grandson of the founder, and John Gaff Gillespie as partners.
