Sablatnig SF-2
__NOTOC__ The Sablatnig SF-2 was a reconnaissance seaplane produced in Germany during the First World War.Taylor 1989, p.787 Development A refined version of the Sablatnig SF-1, the SF-2 featured a new empennage and was fitted with a radio transmitter.Gray & Thetford 1962, p.539Nowarra 1966, p.78 The prototype (serial 580) had a smaller tail-fin and rudder than the SF-1, but production examples added a large ventral fin. Construction was of wood, skinned i fabric. Operational history Sablatnig delivered six aircraft (navy serials 580–585) between June and September 1916. These were followed by ten machines built under licence by LVG (serials 791–800) between October and December, and ten more built by Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft, LFG (serials 705–714) between April and May the following year. Luft-Fahrzeug-Gesellschaft, also referred to as LFG, was a German aircraft manufacturer during World War I. They are best known for their various "Roland" designs, notably the Roland C.II ''Walfisch'' (whale), Roland D.II ''haifisch'' (Shark) and Roland D.VI, although they also produced a number of airships and many experimental designs. The pilot and observer sat in open cockpits in tandem, and the undercarriage consisted of twin pontoons braced to the underside of the fuselage and to wings. Operational history Sablatnig delivered the SF-1 prototype to the SVK (''Seeflugzeug Versuchs Kommando'' – "Seaplane Testing Command") in October 1915 under the naval serial number 490. A floatplane is a type of seaplane with one or more slender floats mounted under the fuselage to provide buoyancy. By contrast, a flying boat uses its fuselage for buoyancy. Either type of seaplane may also have landing gear suitable for land, making the vehicle an amphibious aircraft. British usage is to call "floatplanes" "seaplanes" rather than use the term "seaplane" to refer to both floatplanes and flying boats. Biplanes
A biplane is a fixed-wing aircraft with two main wings stacked one above the other. The first powered, controlled aeroplane to fly, the Wright Flyer, used a biplane wing arrangement, as did many aircraft in the early years of aviation. While a biplane wing structure has a structural advantage over a monoplane, it produces more drag than a monoplane wing. Improved structural techniques, better materials and higher speeds made the biplane configuration obsolete for most purposes by the late 1930s.
