Sabino Barinaga
Sabino Barinaga Alberdi (15 August 1922 – 19 March 1988) was a Spanish football forward and manager. He appeared in 205 La Liga matches and scored 92 goals over 13 seasons, almost exclusively for Real Madrid. He later embarked on a managerial career, which lasted nearly 25 years. Playing career Born in Durango, Biscay, Barinaga moved to England in his teens at the start of the Spanish Civil War, accompanied by two of his three siblings. Durango, Biscay
Durango is a town and municipality of the historical territory and province of Biscay, located in the Basque Country, Spain. It is the main town of Durangaldea, one of the ''comarcas'' of Biscay. Because of its economical activities and population, Durango is considered one of the largest towns in Biscay after the ones that compose the conurbation of Greater Bilbao. Durango has 29,318 inhabitants (2017). The town is crossed by three rivers (as illustrated in the town symbol). Raimundo Pérez Lezama
Raimundo Pérez Lezama (29 November 1922 – 23 July 2007) was a Spanish footballer who played as a goalkeeper. After beginning his professional career in England, he returned to his country, going on to later represent, mainly, Athletic Bilbao. Club career Refugee in England Lezama was born in Barakaldo, Biscay but moved to England as a refugee at the age of 14. He entered at the port of Southampton on board the ''Habana'' on 23 May 1937, he and his brother Luis being among 3,889 Basque children fleeing the Spanish Civil War; some of the other refugees also became footballers, including Emilio Aldecoa, Sabino Barinaga and José Gallego. José Gallego (footballer, Born 1923)
José Augustin "Joe" Gallego (8 April 1923 – 17 September 2006), was a Spanish footballer who played as an outside forward for various clubs in the English Football League in the 1940s and 1950s. Football career Gallego was born in Errenteria in the Basque Country in Spain. His father was a Spanish government worker who fled to England as a refugee in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Gallego arrived in England as a 14-year-old along with his three sisters and his younger brother, Antonio (Tony), who was also to have a short career as a professional footballer, as a goalkeeper with Norwich City. Some of the other refugees also became footballers, including Raimundo Pérez Lezama, Sabino Barinaga and Emilio Aldecoa. Emilio Aldecoa Gómez (30 November 1922 – 4 September 1999) was a Spanish professional footballer who played in the English and Spanish football leagues and later managed in Spain and England. He made one appearance for the Spain national team, as a substitute in a 2–1 win against Ireland in May 1948 at the Montjuic Stadium, Barcelona.
