Saara Hopea
Saara Elisabet Hopea-Untracht (1925 –1984) was a Finnish designer whose work included glassware and jewellery. Personal life and education Hopea was born on 26 August 1925 in Porvoo, Uusimaa, Finland. She was the granddaughter of goldsmith Samuel Mika Westerlund, her mother was a talented craftswoman, and her father Ossian Hopea was manager of the Westerlund goldsmiths business. She studied from 1943 to 1946 at the Central School of Industrial Design or School of Applied Arts, now part of Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture, in Helsinki, and gained a degree in interior design. She married Oppi Untracht, an American metalsmith, writer and educator, in 1960, after meeting him when he visited Finland in 1954. She died in Porvoo on 25 June 1982. Porvoo
Porvoo (; sv, Borgå ; la, Borgoa) is a city and a municipality in the Uusimaa region of Finland, situated on the southern coast about east of the city border of Helsinki and about from the city centre. Oppi A. J. Untracht (November 17, 1922 – July 5, 2008) was an American master metalsmith, educator, and writer. Biography Born in New York City, Untracht obtained his Master of Fine Arts at Columbia University in 1947. Originally trained as a photographer, he studied Indian arts and crafts and later became an expert on the jewelry of India and Nepal. In addition to being an honorary member of the , in 2000 Untracht was awarded a Lifetime American Achievement Award on behalf of the American Craft Council. His first book, ''Metal Techniques for Craftsmen'' is considered a standard training textbook for silversmiths. Untracht married Finnish designer Saara Hopea, and moved permanently to Finland in 1967. Paavo Viljo Tynell (25 January 1890 – 13 September 1973) was a Finnish designer who is best known for his lighting fixtures and lamps.
