The previous SS Rotterdam In early 1906 the Holland-Amerika Lijn (HAL) sold her steamship ''Rotterdam'' III to the Danish Det Forenede Dampskibsselskab, who renamed her ''C.F. Tietgen''. The SS ''Rotterdam'' from 1908 was the fourth ''Rotterdam'' by that name of the HAL. She is often referred to as ''Rotterdam IV'', but this designation was rarely used at the time. Ordering and construction Before 1906 the HAL had ships that were no larger than 12,500 tons. The HAL then decided on a strategy to use bigger ships. In February 1906 the HAL received the New Amsterdam of 17,200 tons built by Harland and Wolff. By July 1906 it was known that the HAL had ordered a new Rotterdam of 23,000 tons at Harland and Wolff. It was to be delivered in Spring 1908. By January 1907 it was known that she would be named ''Rotterdam''. The launch of the ''Rotterdam'' was planned for 22 February 1908. Unrestricted submarine warfare is a type of naval warfare in which submarines sink merchant ships such as freighters and tankers without warning, as opposed to attacks per prize rules (also known as "cruiser rules") that call for warships to search merchantmen and place crews in "a place of safety" (for which lifeboats do not qualify, except under particular circumstances) before sinking them, unless the ship shows "persistent refusal to stop ... or active resistance to visit or search". To follow the rules a submarine must surface, defeating the purpose of submarines and putting itself in danger of attack. History Limitations on warfare at sea date back to the 1899 Hague Convention. During the First World War, the United Kingdom introduced Q-ships with concealed deck guns and many armed merchantmen, leading Germany to ignore the prize rules. SS Rotterdam
The fifth SS ''Rotterdam'', also known as "The Grande Dame", is a former ocean liner and cruise ship, and has been a hotel ship in Rotterdam, Netherlands since 2010. She was launched by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands in a gala ceremony on 13 September 1958, and was completed the following summer. The ''Rotterdam'' was the last great Dutch "ship of state", employing the finest artisans from the Netherlands in her construction and fitting out process. Her career spanned forty-one years. She sailed from 1959 until her final retirement in September 2000. Concept and design Originally she was conceived as a running mate to the popular launched in 1937, but work was put on hold at the outbreak of World War II in Europe. When economic conditions once again became favorable for completion of the new ship in early 1954, the beginning of the end of ocean liners as basic transport was visible on the horizon.
