State Road 228 (SR 228) is a state highway in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Florida. It exists in two distinct sections, separated by both Baker County Road 228 and Duval CR 228, which are former segments of SR 228. The western segment of SR 228 exists in Macclenny, connecting US 90 and Baker CR 228 with Interstate 10 (I-10) at exit 336 and another instance of the county road. Its main segment is in Jacksonville. This segment connects U.S. Route 301 (US 301) and Duval CR 228 in the far southwest corner of the city with US 90 in the Southside neighborhood of the city. Macclenny, Florida
Macclenny is a city in Baker County, Florida . Located just west of Jacksonville, it is one of the principal municipalities comprising Greater Jacksonville. The population was 7,304 at the 2020 census, up from 6,374 in 2010. It is the county seat of Baker County. History Macclenny was first called Darbyville because most of the land of this area was owned by the Darby family. Carr Bowers McClenny married into the Darby family, and then bought most of this land in the late 19th century, intending to harvest it for timber. Darbyville became known as McClenny. McClenny developed many businesses there related to lumber: harvesting the wood, sawmills to process it, turpentine, and land. The town name McClenny was changed to the current name of The City of Macclenny because the post office department had a rule against using capital letters in the middle of a name. State Road 23 (SR 23), also known as the First Coast Expressway, is an outer bypass around the southwest quadrant of Jacksonville. , the first phase has been built, linking the Middleburg area to Interstate 10 near Whitehouse. Interstate 95 (I-95) is the main Interstate Highway of Florida's Atlantic Coast. It begins at a partial interchange with U.S. Highway 1 (US 1) just south of downtown Miami, and heads north past Daytona Beach, through Jacksonville, and to the Georgia state line at the St. Marys River near Becker.
