The Special Operations Peculiar MODification (SOPMOD) kit is an accessory system for the M4A1 carbine, CQBR, FN SCAR Mk 16/17, HK416 and other weapons used by United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), though it is not specific to SOCOM. The kit allows US Special Operations Forces (US SOF) personnel to configure their weapons to individual preferences and mission requirements. The program dates back to September 1989, when the Special Operations Special Technology (SOST) ''Modular Close Combat Carbine Project'' was founded. This was the first program to standardize components from the 1970s/1980s era of "duct tape and hose clamps". Close Quarters Battle Receiver
The Close Quarter Battle Receiver (CQBR) is a replacement upper receiver for the M4A1 Carbine, developed by the US Navy. The CQBR features a 10.3 in (262 mm) length barrel (similar to the Colt Commando short-barreled M16 variants of the past) which makes the weapon significantly more compact, thus making it easier to use in, and around, vehicles and in tight, confined spaces. The overall length of the upper receiver is 19.25 inches (489 mm). With the stock retracted, the overall length of the weapon is 26.75 inches (679.4 mm). Those created as complete rifles (rather than only upper receivers) are type designated as MK 18 MOD 0/1. AN/PEQ-5
The AN/PEQ-5 is a laser sight manufactured by Insight Technology. The sight is mil-spec and projects a visible red dot. The unit is the Carbine Visible Laser or CVL version of the larger AN-PEQ-2, and is found in the SOPMOD Block I kit for use by the U.S. military. The unit comprises a single rugged box that houses a visible red laser, which mounts to a weapon using a MIL-STD-1913 rail. The one major difference between the AN-PEQ-5 and the larger AN-PEQ-2, is the AN-PEQ-5 lacks the IR illuminator/target designator which is only visible through night vision devices. M203 Grenade Launcher
The M203 is a single-shot 40 mm under-barrel grenade launcher designed to attach to a rifle. It uses the same rounds as the older stand-alone M79 break-action grenade launcher, which utilizes the high-low propulsion system to keep recoil forces low. Quite versatile and compatible with many rifle models, the M203 was originally designed for the U.S. M16 and its carbine variant, the M4.
