SMoCA
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) in the state of Arizona is a museum in the Old Town district of downtown Scottsdale, Arizona. The museum is dedicated to exhibiting modern works of art, design and architecture. The Museum has four galleries that house various exhibitions, curated from their growing permanent collection and rotating shows. Knight Rise skyspace, by Arizona artist James Turrell, is permanently on view. History SMoCA was conceived in 1988 and opened in February 1999. The now-evocative, minimalist building is a complete retrofit by Phoenix-based architect Will Bruder of a former movie theater. The museum is run for the city by Scottsdale Arts, a non-profit corporation. Will Bruder
Will Bruder (born 1946) is an American architect. Biography Self-trained as an architect, Will Bruder received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, taking supplemental courses in structural engineering, philosophy, art history, and urban planning. Bruder was a student of Paolo Soleri, where he acquired field experience in woodwork, metal work, and masonry. In the summer of 1967, Bruder participated in Soleri's Silt Pile Workshop, and in 1968, he was an apprentice of Soleri at his Cosanti studio. Projects that he worked on during that time with Soleri include construction of the concrete vaults of the main drafting room, the 3D Jersey Project, and Soleri's book ''Arcology: The City in the Image of Man''. Lydia Okumura
Lydia Okumura (born 1948) is a Brazilian artist known for her geometric abstractions. Biography Okumura was born in 1948 in São Paulo. She studied at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, graduating in 1973. In the 1970s she was part of a São Paulo art collective, "Equipe3". In 1973, Equipe3 participated in the São Paulo Bienal with the site-specific work ''Pontos de vista''. Around that time Okumura moved to New York City to attended the Pratt Graphics Center. She has exhibited extensively since the 1970s. Okumura's practice includes drawings, wall paintings and sculptural installations that play with spatial illusions using geometric abstraction. Her work is included in the collections of the Akron Art Museum, the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Paolo Soleri
Paolo Soleri (21 June 1919 – 9 April 2013) was an Italian-born American architect. He established the educational Cosanti Foundation and Arcosanti. Soleri was a lecturer in the College of Architecture at Arizona State University and a National Design Award recipient in 2006. He coined the concept of 'arcology' – a synthesis of architecture and ecology as the philosophy of democratic society. He died at home of natural causes on 9 April 2013 at the age of 93. Soleri authored several books, including ''The Bridge Between Matter & Spirit is Matter Becoming Spirit'' and ''Arcology – City In the Image of Man''. Olafur Eliasson ( is, Ólafur Elíasson; born 5 February 1967) is an Icelandic–Danish artist known for sculptured and large-scale installation art employing elemental materials such as light, water, and air temperature to enhance the viewer's experience. In 1995 he established Studio Olafur Eliasson in Berlin, a laboratory for spatial research.
