SGB Championship 2023
The 2023 SGB Cab Direct Championship season will be the 76th season of the second tier of British Speedway and the 6th known as the SGB Championship. The British Speedway Network (BSN) would stream 35 matches live for the second year running. Summary Nine clubs will compete in the Championship in 2023, with Edinburgh Monarchs remaining in the league despite problems surrounding their home venue. The only change to the league is Leicester Lions, who left for the higher league of the SGB Premiership 2023. The league format will be the same as in 2022, with each team racing against each other twice (home and away), meaning a total of 16 fixtures each during the season. The points system has been revamped and simplified, with teams scoring two points for a win (home or away), with a bonus point scored for an aggregate win. Poole Pirates
Poole Pirates (also known as Poole Speedway) are a motorcycle speedway team based in Poole, England, competing in the SGB Championship. The club have been the champions of the United Kingdom on ten occasions. Poole Speedway is promoted by local businessman Matt Ford and son Danny Ford, who took over promoting rights of the club in 1998. The team is managed by past rider and former Great Britain team manager Neil Middleditch. Wimborne Road Stadium has been home to the club since it was founded in 1948. In August 2004, Poole hosted the Speedway World Cup final, which was won by Sweden. Stadium Poole Stadium (also known as Wimborne Road Stadium), has been the Pirates' home track since the club was created in 1948. Jacob Hook
Jacob Hook (born 21 August 2002) is a speedway rider from Australia. Speedway career Hook began riding at the North Brisbane Junior Motorcycle Club and impressed in Australian junior racing. He began his British speedway career riding for the Edinburgh Monarchs in the SGB Championship 2022. Hook's 2020 & 2021 seasons were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic before he joined the Monarchs. In 2023, he re-signed for Edinburgh in the SGB Championship 2023 and also signed for Edinburgh's NDL academy side. He was later dropped by the first team. Leon Flint
Leon Flint (born 22 February 2003) is a speedway rider from England. Career Flint began his British speedway career riding for Birmingham Brummies during the 2018 National League speedway season. In 2021 he rode in the top tier of British Speedway for the first time, riding for the Wolverhampton Wolves in the SGB Premiership 2021, in addition to riding for the Berwick Bandits in the SGB Championship 2021. In 2022, he rode for Wolverhampton again in the SGB Premiership 2022 and for the Berwick again in the SGB Championship 2022. During the season he won the 2022 British U21 title. Jye Etheridge (born 30 April 1995) is an Australian speedway rider Career Etheridge has appeared in the top tier of British Speedway, riding for the Belle Vue Aces in the SGB Premiership. He is a three times rider of the year for Berwick Bandits. In 2021, Etheridge rode for the Belle Vue Aces in the SGB Premiership and the Berwick Bandits in the SGB Championship. Connor Coles
Connor Coles (born 7 September 1994) is a speedway rider from England. Speedway career Coles began his speedway career riding for Rye House Raiders during the 2012 National League speedway season and then moved to Kent Kings for the 2013 National League speedway season. He then spent three seasons with the Mildenhall Fen Tigers, in which time he helped the team win the National Trophy. It was in 2017 that Coles moved up to the SGB Championship and rode for Newcastle Diamonds for the SGB Championship 2017 season. He also appeared for Eastbourne and the Isle of Wight in the third division. Following a season with Buxton he joined Edinburgh in the SGB Championship 2019 and Stoke in the NDL. The South Tees Motorsports Park is a purpose-built motorcycle speedway stadium located at South Bank, Middlesbrough, England. SGB Championship Riders' Individual Championship
The SGB Championship Riders' Individual Championship is an annual motorcycle speedway contest between the top riders (or two riders) with the highest average points total from each club competing in the SGB Championship. Oxford Stadium
Oxford Stadium is a greyhound racing and speedway venue in Oxford, located in Sandy Lane, Cowley. Races were historically held every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday evening with afternoon BAGS (Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service) racing on Friday and Sunday. Race evenings also included Friday evenings at various times throughout the history of the stadium. Stadium facilities There was a 350-seater grandstand restaurant overlooking the track, with three executive suites and large general public areas named after some of Oxford's most successful greyhounds Sandwinder, Security Sam, Self Made and Perth Pat. SGB Championship Pairs Championship
The SGB Championship Pairs Championship formerly the Premier League Pairs Championship (from 1997 to 2016) is a motorcycle speedway contest for the second tier teams in the SGB Championship in the United Kingdom. The teams consist of the top two riders from each club competing. The meetings comprise ten teams of two riders drawn into two qualifying groups. Rules Gate positions In the ''Qualification Heats'', riders are allocated starting gates. For the ''Semi-Finals'', the group winners have first choice of gate positions (A&C or B&D). Gate A is on the inside of the track, whilst Gate D is on the outside. For the ''Final'', the gate positions (A&C and B&D) are decided by the toss of a coin.
