Sōkō-ji
, is a Buddhist temple belonging to the Sōtō school of Japanese Zen located in the city of Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. Its main image is a statue of Sho-Kannon bosatsu. The Japanese garden at this temple was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty in 1996. History Sōkō-ji was founded in 1384 by Getsuan Ryoen (1348-1425), under the sponsorship of local warlord Satō Masanobu, a descendant of the famed warrior Satō Tsugunobu, who was killed at the Battle of Yashima while defending Minamoto no Yoshitsune. The temple gate was completed in 1811. The temple served as the ''bodaiji'' of the successive ''daimyō'' of Dewa-Matsuyama Domain, a subsidiary domain of Shōnai Domain. The temple garden was reconstructed in 1756 in the style of Kobori Enshū after most of the temple was destroyed in a fire. Amarume Station
is a junction railway station in the town of Shōnai, Yamagata, Japan, operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). Lines Amarume Station is served by the Rikuu West Line and the Uetsu Main Line. The station is located 154.7 rail kilometers from the starting point of the Uetsu Main Line at Niitsu Station, and is the official terminus of the 42.0 kilometer Rikuu West Line, although most trains continue on to Sakata Station. Topiary is the horticultural practice of training perennial plants by clipping the foliage and twigs of trees, shrubs and subshrubs to develop and maintain clearly defined shapes, whether geometric or fanciful. The term also refers to plants which have been shaped in this way. As an art form it is a type of living sculpture. Shōnai Domain
was a feudal domain in Edo period Japan, located in Dewa Province (modern-day Yamagata Prefecture), Japan. It was centered on Tsuruoka Castle in what is now the city of Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture, and was thus also known as the . It was governed for the whole of its history by the Sakai clan, which resulted in an unusually stable and prosperous domain. During their rule over Shōnai, the Sakai clan was ranked as a family, and as such, had the privilege of shogunal audiences in the Great Hall (''Ohiroma'') of Edo Castle. In the Boshin War of 1868–69, the domain joined the ''Ōuetsu Reppan Dōmei'', the alliance of northern domains supporting the Tokugawa shogunate, but then later defected to the imperial side. is a city in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. , the city had an estimated population of 125,389 in 49,024 households, and a population density of 95.74 persons per km². The total area of the city is . Tsuruoka is the biggest city in Tōhoku region in terms of surface area.
