São Tomé Island League is the top division of the São Toméan Football Federation for the São Tomé Island. The champion competes at the national championships each year. History Before independence, it was the only regional competition in the nation. It was the sole competition in the country and was acted as a national competition until 1985 when the Príncipe League were founded. From 1986 to 1988, 1991, 1992 and 1994 to 1997 as the other island's competitions were not held, the island champions were also national champions. São Tomé Island, at , is the largest island of São Tomé and Príncipe and is home in May 2018 to about 193,380 or 96% of the nation's population. The island is divided into six districts. It is located 2 km (1¼ miles) north of the equator. Geography São Tomé Island is about long (north-south) by wide (east-west). It rises to at Pico de São Tomé and includes the capital city, São Tomé, on the northeast coast. The nearest city on mainland Africa is the port city of Port Gentil in Gabon located to the east. Santana Futebol Clube is a football club that plays in the São Tomé and Príncipe Championship. The team is based in the island of São Tomé. The team has won one title and is the seventh team ever to win their first title as well as their only title in 1991. In the same year, they won the opening and the insular titles as well. Santana are one of two clubs from Cantagalo to get a national competitive honor. Santana was the first São Tomean club to participate in any of the African competitions in 1999, the next appearance was in 2001 and the third was in 2013.
