São Sebastião (Portuguese for Saint Sebastian) is a parish in the municipality of Ponta Delgada in the Azores. The population in 2011 was 3,953, in an area of 3.34 km². The parish is part of the downtown area of Ponta Delgada. Until June 30, 2003, the parish was known as Matriz (Ponta Delgada). São Miguel Island (; Portuguese language, Portuguese for "Saint Michael"), nicknamed "The Green Island" (''Ilha Verde''), is the largest and most populous island in the Portugal, Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Saint Sebastian
Saint Sebastian (in Latin: ''Sebastianus''; Narbo, Gallia Narbonensis, Roman Empire c. AD 255 – Rome, Italia, Roman Empire c. AD 288) was an early Christian saint and martyr. According to traditional belief, he was killed during the Diocletianic Persecution of Christians. He was initially tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows, though this did not kill him. He was, according to tradition, rescued and healed by Saint Irene of Rome, which became a popular subject in 17th-century painting. In all versions of the story, shortly after his recovery he went to Diocletian to warn him about his sins, and as a result was clubbed to death. He is venerated in the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church. Ponta Delgada City Hall ( pt, Paços do Concelho de Ponta Delgada) is a 17th-century structure constructed to house the municipal council/authority, situated in the Freguesia (Portugal), civil parish of São Sebastião (Ponta Delgada), São Sebastião, Concelho, municipality of Ponta Delgada, on the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores.
