São Paulo International Marathon
The São Paulo International Marathon ( pt, Maratona Internacional de São Paulo) is an annual road-based marathon hosted by São Paulo, Brazil, since 1995. It was categorized as a Bronze Label Road Race by the International Association of Athletics Federations, and is the first race in Brazil to have achieved this distinction. The marathon is also a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races. During the race weekend, a half marathon, a 10K race, and a 5K race are also offered. Ibirapuera Park
Ibirapuera Park ( pt, Parque Ibirapuera) is an urban park in São Paulo. It comprises 158 hectares between Av. República do Líbano, Av. Pedro Alvares Cabral, and Av. IV Centenário, and is the most visited park in South America, with 14.4 million visits in 2017. Ibirapuera Park was the first metropolitan park in São Paulo, designed along the lines of other great English landscape gardens built in the 20th century in major cities around the globe, but inspired on modern drafts from the landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx. It was inaugurated on 21 August 1954 for the 400th anniversary of the city of São Paulo with buildings designed by architect João Felipe Pereira and landscape by agronomist Otávio Augusto Teixeira Mendes. Saint Silvester Road Race
The Saint Silvester Road Race ( pt, Corrida Internacional de São Silvestre) is a long-distance running event, the oldest and most prestigious street race in Brazil. Regarded as the main international event in Latin American athletics, the Brazilian competition is held yearly in the city of São Paulo on December 31. This day is Saint Silvester's Day, as it is the day in which the Catholic saint, who was a Pope, died in the 4th century of the Christian Era. São Paulo's race was originally known as a "marathon", although the course of the race, whose length has varied considerably over the years, was never that of a full marathon. Because of that, the organization eventually dropped the term "marathon", starting to refer to the event as a "race", "international race" or "road race". Nadezhda Wijenberg (born Nadezhda Alexeevna Ilyina on 2 April 1964 in Kanash) is a long-distance runner from Russia, who got the Dutch nationality in 1999 by marrying her coach Ger Wijenberg from the Netherlands. Nadezhda "Nadja" Wijenberg lives in Schinnen, Limburg, and ran her personal best (2:28:45) in the Eindhoven Marathon, on 10 October 1999. Luíz Antônio dos Santos (6 September 1964 – 6 November 2021) was a Brazilian long-distance runner who specialized in the marathon. Born in Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro, he was a World Championships bronze medalist and a 1996 Olympian. He twice won the Chicago Marathon and also won the Fukuoka Marathon. Career Santos's first international appearances came in cross country running. He was part of the Brazilian team at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1991 and 1993, as well as being in the top eight at the South American Cross Country Championships in 1992, 1993 and 1994, sharing in the team gold at the latter two editions. The Association of International Marathons and Distance Races, also known as AIMS, is an association of the organisers of long-distance road running races. It was founded in 1982 at a meeting in London of marathon race directors. Its membership was extended in 1986 to include all road races. In June 2016, over 400 race organisations were members. World Athletics Label Road Races are races that the World Athletics (until 2019: ''IAAF'') designates as one of the "leading road races around the world." The classification was first introduced for the 2008 running season, upon the suggestion of the IAAF Road Running Commission. The races are split into three categories: marathons, half marathons and other. Within the "other" category are traditional road race distances, over which World Athletics world records can be set, along with some "Classical races", which span unusual distances. The Labels are considered a prestigious award by race organisers, and include the six World Marathon Majors. In the first year, only Gold and Silver Labels were awarded, and 49 races were recognised.
