The Syro-Malabar Catholic Eparchy of Belthangady is an Eastern Catholic eparchy in Belthangady, India, under the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church. It was established in 1999 by Pope John Paul II's bull "Cum Ampla". It is a suffragan diocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Tellicherry. The bishop of this diocese is Lawrence Mukkuzhy. This diocese had been established for the Syro-Malabar Christians of three districts in Karnataka, namely Dakshina Kannada, Kodagu and Udupi. The Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Thalassery (anglicised - Tellicherry) is an archeparchy of the Syro-Malabar Church in communion with the See of Rome. The boundaries of the Thalassery ecclesiastical province were extended to include Mangalore, Chickmangalore, Mysore, Shimoga and Ootty as there were settlers in the neighbouring States. Ambrose Madtha (2 November 1955 – 8 December 2012) was the Roman Catholic archbishop and the Nuncio to Ivory Coast. He was the sixth Indian to become an Apostolic Nuncio. Early life Ambrose Madtha was born in Belthangady, on 2 November 1955 to Joseph Madtha and Mary Madtha. The Deanery of Belthangady or Belthangady Varado is one of the deaneries which comes under Diocese of Mangalore located at Belthangady, Karnataka, India.
