Syrian Civil Defense
The White Helmets ( ''al-Ḫawdh al-bayḍāʾ'' / ''al-Qubaʿāt al-Bayḍāʾ''), officially known as Syria Civil Defence (SCD; ar, الدفاع المدني السوري ''ad-Difāʿ al-Madanī as-Sūrī''), is a volunteer organisation that operates in parts of opposition-controlled Syria and in Turkey. Formed in 2014 during the Syrian Civil War, the majority of the volunteers' activity in Syria consists of medical evacuation, urban search and rescue in response to bombing, evacuation of civilians from danger areas, and essential service delivery. As of April 2018, the organisation said it had saved about 114,000 lives, and that 204 of its members had lost their lives while performing their duties. James Le Mesurier
James Gustaf Edward Le Mesurier (25 May 1971 – 11 November 2019) was the British co-founder of the White Helmets (Syrian civil war), White Helmets, a volunteer civil defence organisation in the Syrian Civil War, founded in southern Turkey in 2014. Le Mesurier was a British Army Officer (armed forces), officer and worked as part of the United Nations peacekeeping force in the former Yugoslavia. He was the director of the non-profit Mayday Rescue Foundation, headquartered in the Netherlands. Le Mesurier died in a fall from the balcony of an Istanbul building where he kept an apartment and an office. Early life Le Mesurier was born on 25 May 1971 at RAF Changi in Singapore. Mayday Rescue Foundation
The Mayday Rescue Foundation was a not-for-profit foundation registered in the Netherlands specialised in training, equipping, and assisting volunteer emergency first responders in areas of conflict, instability, and natural disaster, primarily Syrian Civil War affected areas. Its mission was "saving lives, strengthening communities." It was established by James Le Mesurier, a former British Army officer, in 2014, and operated primarily in the Middle East through offices in Turkey and Jordan.
