The Syracuse Metropolitan Statistical Area, as defined by the United States Census Bureau, is an area that comprises three counties in central New York, with the city of Syracuse as its core. According to the 2020 census, the population of the MSA was 662,057, a slight difference from 662,577 in the 2010 census. In the United States, a metropolitan statistical area (MSA) is a geographical region with a relatively high population density at its core and close economic ties throughout the area. Such regions are neither legally Incorporated town, incorporated as a city or town would be, nor are they legal administrative divisions like County (United States), counties or separate entities such as U.S. state, states; because of this, the precise definition of any given metropolitan area can vary with the source. The statistical criteria for a standard metropolitan area were defined in 1949 and redefined as metropolitan statistical area in 1983. The United States census of 2010 was the twenty-third United States national census. National Census Day, the reference day used for the census, was April 1, 2010. The census was taken via mail-in citizen self-reporting, with enumerators serving to spot-check randomly selected neighborhoods and communities. As part of a drive to increase the count's accuracy, 635,000 temporary enumerators were hired. The population of the United States was counted as 308,745,538, a 9.7% increase from the 2000 census. Constantia is a town in Oswego County, New York, United States. The population was 4,973 at the 2010 census. The Town of Constantia is located in the southeastern part of the county. Located with the town is a hamlet and census-designated place also named Constantia. History The town was first settled ''circa'' 1793 and was known then as "Rotterdam." Cazenovia is an incorporated town in Madison County, New York. The population was 6,740 at the time of the 2020 census. The town is named after Theophile Cazenove, the ''Agent General'' of the Holland Land Company. The Town of Cazenovia has a village also named Cazenovia. The town is on the county's western border. The village of Cazenovia is home to Cazenovia College, a small liberal arts college in the greater Syracuse area. It was founded in 1824, known then as the Genesee Seminary. Salina is a town in Onondaga County, New York, United States. The population was 33,710 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from the Latin word for "salt". Salina is a northwestern suburb of the city of Syracuse. History The region was in the domain of the Onondaga tribe and later was within the Central New York Military Tract, although it was reserved for members of the Onondaga. Salina received its name in 1797, when the Surveyor General received authority to set aside a portion of the Salt Reservation for use in salt manufacture. The Salt Reservation had been created by a treaty with the Native Americans. It extended one mile around Onondaga Lake. In 1798, the Village of Salina was chartered. The town was named after American attorney and statesman Henry Clay. Clay is north of Syracuse.
