2009 World Aquatics Championships
The 2009 World Aquatics Championships ( it, Campionati mondiali di nuoto 2009) or the XIII FINA World Championships were held in Rome, Italy from 18 July to 2 August 2009. The 2009 Championships featured competition in all 5 aquatics disciplines: diving, swimming, open water swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo. Rome won the right to stage the event on 16 July 2005 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Rome defeated rival bids from Athens (Greece), Moscow (Russia) and Yokohama (Japan). A record 2556 athletes from 185 countries participated. FINA's decision to allow the use of polyurethane suits caused these Championships to be dubbed the "Plastic Games". Natalia Sergeyevna Ishchenko (russian: Наталья Серге́евна Ищенко; born 8 April 1986) is a retired Russian competitor in synchronized swimming, five-times Olympic champion and nineteen-times world champion. Ishchenko announced her retirement from sports in April 2017. Since November, she serves as Vice Minister of Sports of Kaliningrad Oblast. Gemma Mengual Civil (born 12 April 1977 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain) is a Spanish synchronised swimmer. She has competed at the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. On 15 February 2012 she announced her retirement. After retiring she became involved with coaching the national synchronised swimming team. However in June 2015 Mengual announced that she would return to competition with the aim of competing at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Russia, in the mixed duet with Pau Ribas, whom she had previously coached. Although she had previously indicated that she would not compete beyond the World Championships, in September of that year she confirmed via social media that she would compete in the duet in the 2016 Summer Olympics with Ona Carbonell. Marie-Pier Boudreau Gagnon (born March 3, 1983 in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec) is a Canadian synchronized swimmer and four times Commonwealth Games gold medalist. Career She first became interested in synchronized swimming at the age of seven after watching Sylvie Fréchette on television, and has been a member of Synchro Canada's national team since 1998.
