Sylvia (given Name)
Sylvia is a feminine given name of Latin origin, also spelled Silvia. The French form is Sylvie. The name originates from the Latin word for forest ''Silva'' and its meaning is ''spirit of the wood ''. The mythological god of the forest was associated with the figure of Silvanus. William Shakespeare imported 'Silvia' to England. Silvia is the protagonist in the Shakespearean poem: Who is Silvia? what is she, That all our swains commend her? Today, Silvia is the more modern spelling of the name Sylvia. In Roman mythology, Silvia is the goddess of the forest while Rea Silvia was the mother of Romulus and Remus. Silvia is also the name of one of the female innamorati of the ''commedia dell'arte'' and is a character of the ''Aminta'' written by Torquato Tasso. Sylvia (that spelling) was the 137th most popular girl's name in Britain in 1900. 87 Sylvia
Sylvia (minor planet designation: 87 Sylvia) is the one of the largest asteroids (approximately tied for 7th place, to within measurement uncertainties). It is the parent body of the Sylvia family and member of Cybele group located beyond the main asteroid belt (see minor-planet groups). Sylvia was the first asteroid known to possess more than one moon. Discovery and naming Sylvia was discovered by N. R. Pogson on May 16, 1866, from Madras (Chennai), India.Pogson, N. R. (1866), Minor Planet (87) Sylvia', Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. 26, p. 311 (June 1866) Antonio Paluzie-Borrell, writing in Paul Herget's ''The Names of the Minor Planets'' (1955), mistakenly states that the name honors Sylvie Petiaux-Hugo Flammarion, the first wife of astronomer Camille Flammarion. In fact, in the article announcing the discovery of the asteroid, Pogson explained that he selected the name in reference to Rhea Silvia, mother of Romulus and Remus (''MNRAS'', 1866). Phys ... Sylvia (musical)
''Sylvia'' is a British stage work on the life of Sylvia Pankhurst. It was originally co-commissioned by the Old Vic, Sadler's Wells and 14-18 NOW from Kate Prince and her company ZooNation to mark the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918 and the end of the First World War. However, it evolved into a full-scale dance, soul, funk and hip hop musical, which was initially presented at The Old Vic as a work-in-progress from 8 to 22 September 2018, with a book by Prince and Priya Parmar. A full production of the completed version will have its world premiere in 2023, playing at The Old Vic from 27 January to 1 April 2023. The main score was written by DJ Walde and Josh Cohen, with additional music by Prince. Sylvia (ballet)
''Sylvia'', originally ''Sylvia, ou La nymphe de Diane'', is a full-length ballet in two or three act (theatre), acts, first choreography, choreographed by Louis Mérante to music by Léo Delibes in 1876. ''Sylvia'' is a typical classical ballet in many respects, yet it has many interesting features that make it unique. The work is notable for its mythological Arcadia (paradise), Arcadian setting, creative choreographies, expansive sets and, above all, its remarkable Sheet music, score. When ''Sylvia, ou La nymphe de Diane'' premiered on 14 June 1876 at the Palais Garnier, it went largely unnoticed by the critics. The first seven productions of ''Sylvia'' were not commercially successful. The 1952 revival, choreographed by Frederick Ashton, Sir Frederick Ashton, popularized the ballet. The 1997, 2004, 2005 and 2009 productions were all based on Ashton's original choreography. History Preparations The origins of the ballet ''Sylvia'' are in the Italian poet Torquato Tasso, Ta ... Sylvia (Elvis Presley Song)
"Sylvia" is a song by Elvis Presley from his 1972 album ''Elvis Now'', being the penultimate song recorded on the last day of the prolific Nashville recording sessions in June 1970 (which yielded a total of more than 30 songs, spread over several albums). For some reason RCA Victor (possibly considering it as a single candidate)Jorgensen, ''Elvis Presley A Life in Music: The Complete Recording Sessions''. New York: St. Martin's Press, 1998; p. 307. did not include the song either on ''That’s The Way It Is'' album in 1970 or on ''Love Letters from Elvis'' album in 1971, though it was recorded during the same sessions and was thematically appropriate for both these albums. It eventually appeared on ''Elvis Now'' in 1972. However, the 2008 ''FTD'' re-release of ''Love Letters from Elvis'' contained the master version of the track (known as Take 8) as well as all its outtakes. Another version of the song, recorded on July 15, 1970, at MGM Studios during the rehearsals for the M ... Sylvia's Mother
"Sylvia's Mother" is a 1972 single by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show and the group's first hit song. It was written by Shel Silverstein, produced by Ron Haffkine and was highly successful in the United States, reaching #5 on the ''Billboard'' singles chart (tied with " Sexy Eyes" from the album ''Sometimes You Win'' for the band's best performing song), as well as #1 in Ireland and #2 in the United Kingdom. It spent three weeks at #1 on the Australian music charts, making it the 15th ranked single in Australia for 1972; and also reached #1 in South Africa, where it was the 3rd ranked song for the year. It appeared on the group's first album, ''Dr. Hook.'' Song background "Sylvia's Mother" is autobiographical, with songwriter Shel Silverstein drawing upon his unsuccessful attempt to revive a failed relationship. Hospice (The Antlers Album)
''Hospice'' is the third studio album by American indie rock band The Antlers, and their first concept album. It was initially self-distributed by the band in March 2009, and was eventually remastered and re-released once they signed to Frenchkiss Records in August of the same year. Concept ''Hospice'' tells the story of a relationship between a hospice worker and a female patient suffering from terminal bone cancer, their ensuing romance, and their slow downward spiral as a result of the woman's traumas, fears, and disease. The story of her deterioration also serves as a metaphor for an abusive relationship. Frontman Peter Silberman has been reluctant to divulge explicit details regarding the meaning of the record, and the extent to which it is autobiographical. Release The first single was "Bear", released in April 2009 to promote the self-released version of ''Hospice''. "Two" was the first single released commercially, as a digital download in June 2009. Sylvia (Focus Song)
"Sylvia" is a 1972 song by Dutch progressive rock band Focus. It was released on their 1972 album ''Focus 3'' and as a UK single on 27 January 1973. The single became the band's biggest international hit, reaching number 4 in the UK Singles Chart and number 89 in the US Billboard chart. Background First released as a single in The Netherlands in April 1972, the song was subsequently included on the album ''Focus 3'' in November. On 12 December, the band recorded a session for the BBC's ''The Old Grey Whistle Test'', including "Sylvia" segueing into the yodeling of " Hocus Pocus". Aside from Thijs van Leer's short section of falsetto vocalising, the song is instrumental. In 1968, while in the four-piece backing band and vocal group ''Shaffy Chantant'' with lead singer Ramses Shaffy, Thijs composed the melody of the song with words by Linda Van Dijck for Sylvia Alberts to sing. It had the long winded title "''I Thought I Could Do Everything On My Own, I Was Always Stripping Th ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
