Sydney River (2021 pop.: 455) is a community in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Location The community is located at the southern end of Sydney Harbour's South Arm at the mouth of the Sydney River, from which it derives its name. Sydney River is at the interchange between Nova Scotia Highway 125, Highway 125 and Nova Scotia Trunk 4, Trunk 4. History Sydney River was once rural, but became more urban throughout the decades. The town developed into a suburb during the 1960s-1970s. Sydney River has seen commercial development with the construction of a shopping centre, grocery stores and restaurants. The Sydney River is a short river located in Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Nova Scotia Highway 125
Highway 125 is a 28 km long controlled-access highway located in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The provincial government named it Peacekeepers Way on August 18, 2008. Part of the provincial 100-series arterial highway network, Highway 125 encircles the west side of Sydney Harbour, from an interchange with Highway 105 (the Trans-Canada Highway) at Sydney Mines to Trunk 4 (Grand Lake Road) immediately east of Sydney. Nova Scotia Trunk 4
Trunk 4 is part of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia's system of Trunk Highways. The route runs from Highway 104 exit 7 near Thomson Station to Glace Bay. Until the construction of the Trans-Canada Highway, Trunk 4 was a major traffic link in northern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, and is still used on Cape Breton as an alternative to Highway 105. The highway was originally called the King's Highway, however, this name is no longer applied to the entire road. Sydney River McDonald's Murders
The Sydney River McDonald's murders occurred on May 7, 1992, at the McDonald's restaurant in Sydney River, Nova Scotia, Canada. They were committed by a trio of friends who robbed the restaurant, murdering three people and permanently disabling a fourth in the process. It was one of the highest-profile murder cases in Canada at the time. Robbery and murders Derek Wood, 18, an employee of the restaurant along with two friends, Freeman Daniel MacNeil, 23, and Darren Muise, 18, broke into the restaurant after closing, planning to rob the establishment. They murdered their victims with a .22 calibre pistol, several knives, and a shovel. One victim survived after being shot in the face, but was left permanently disabled. 2021 Canadian Census
The 2021 Canadian census was a detailed enumeration of the Canadian population with a reference date of May 11, 2021. It follows the 2016 Canadian census, which recorded a population of 35,151,728. The overall response rate was 98%, which is slightly lower than the response rate for the 2016 census. It recorded a population of 36,991,981, a 5.2% increase from 2016.
