Vice Admiral (Royal Navy), Vice Admiral Sir Sydney Moffatt Raw Order of the British Empire, KBE Order of the Bath, CB (1898–1967) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Fourth Sea Lord. Naval career Raw served in World War I and fought at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. He also served in World War II and led the naval work on the recovery of the submarine HMS Thetis (N25), HMS ''Thetis'' off Anglesey in 1939 before being given command of the submarine tender HMS Medway (F25), HMS ''Medway'' in 1940 and being appointed Chief of Staff to the Admiral (Submarines) in 1942. He also commanded the cruiser HMS Phoebe (43), HMS ''Phoebe'' during operations on the Burma coast from 1944. In 1947 he was appointed Commodore at the HMNB Devonport, Royal Naval Barracks Devonport before becoming Commodore Submarine Service, Flag Officer Submarines in 1950 and Fourth Sea Lord, Fourth Sea Lord and Chief of Supplies and Transport in 1952. A cruiser is a type of warship. Modern cruisers are generally the largest ships in a fleet after aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, and can usually perform several operational roles from search-and-destroy to ocean escort to sea denial. The Board of Admiralty (1628–1964) was established in 1628 when Charles I put the office of Lord High Admiral into commission. As that position was not always occupied, the purpose was to enable management of the day-to-day operational requirements of the Royal Navy; at that point administrative control of the navy was still the responsibility of the Navy Board, established in 1546. This system remained in place until 1832, when the Board of Admiralty became the sole authority charged with both administrative and operational control of the navy when the Navy Board was abolished. The term Admiralty has become synonymous with the command and control of the Royal Navy, partly personified in the Board of Admiralty and in the Admiralty buildings in London from where operations were in large part directed. Admiral Sir Frederick Robertson Parham, GBE, KCB, DSO (9 January 1901 – 20 March 1991) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, The Nore. Naval career Educated at the Royal Naval College, Osborne, and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Parham joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1913. He served in World War I as a midshipman on HMS ''Malaya''. In 1937 he was given command of HMS ''Shikari''. He saw active service in the Second World War as Captain of the destroyer HMS ''Gurkha'', which was sunk by enemy action in 1940. George Simpson (Royal Navy Officer)
Rear Admiral George Walter Gillow Simpson CB, CBE (6 June 1901 – 2 March 1972) was a Royal Navy officer who became Flag Officer Submarines. Naval career Educated at the Royal Naval College, Osborne and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Simpson was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1917. He became commanding officer of the submarine HMS L27 in 1935 and of the submarine HMS ''Porpoise'' in August 1938. He became commander of the 10th Submarine Flotilla, based at Malta in January 1941, during the Second World War, in which role his mission was to prevent enemy supplies reaching North Africa. He went on to be Commodore Western Approaches in April 1943. Simpson became Chief of the New Zealand Navy Staff in 1948, Flag Officer Germany in 1951 and Flag Officer Submarines in 1952.
