Sydney Law
Sydney James Law (23 November 1856 – 7 October 1939) was an Australian politician. Born in Redfern to cabinet maker John Law and Sarah Pollard, he established what would become a highly successful drapery shop in Balmain around 1881. On 4 July 1883 he married Mary Maclean, with whom he had two children. Having joined the Balmain Labour League in 1891, he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Assembly as the member for Balmain South in 1894. In 1902 he resigned from the party and the parliament winning the resulting by-election on 6 December as an Independent Labour member. In 1904 he was elected to the seat of Rozelle as a Liberal. Defeated in 1907, he became an auctioneer in 1909 and became active in New South Wales sectarian politics as a Protestant. Redfern, New South Wales
Redfern is an inner-city suburb of Sydney located 3 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney. Strawberry Hills is a locality on the border with Surry Hills. The area experienced the process of gentrification and is subject to extensive redevelopment plans by the state government, to increase the population and reduce the concentration of poverty in the suburb and neighbouring Waterloo (see Redfern-Eveleigh-Darlington). History The suburb is named after surgeon William Redfern, who was granted of land in this area in 1817 by Lachlan Macquarie. Drummoyne is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Drummoyne is six kilometres west of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative center for the local government area of the City of Canada Bay. Drummoyne sits on the peninsula between Iron Cove and Five Dock Bay. It is surrounded on three sides by the Parramatta River and, as such, has some of Sydney's best waterfront views. James Mercer (Australian Politician)
James Ballantine Mercer (1842 – 4 November 1925) was a Scottish-born Australian politician. He was born in Glasgow to tobacco spinner William Mercer and Grace Dixon. He left school at a young age to work as a woodcarver's apprentice in Sheffield, and then worked as a lay reader for the Church of England. Around 1867 he married Rachel Fearnley, with whom he had four children. He emigrated to Queensland in 1883 and moved to Sydney in 1885, working as a caretaker at the Seaman's Institute at Circular Quay. Around 1907 he married Mary Ann Burley in Melbourne. Liberal Reform Party (Australia)
The Liberal Reform Party was an Australian political party, active in New South Wales state politics between 1901 and 1916. It drew much of its support from Protestant and Temperance groups. History The question of tariff policy which, had created and divided the Free Trade Party and Protectionist Party in New South Wales in the 1890s, became a federal issue at the time of federation. Deprived of their main ideological difference, the two parties were recreated as the Liberal Reform Party, aligned with the federal Free Trade Party, and the Progressive Party, aligned with the federal Protectionist Party. The Progressive Party's vote collapsed at the 1904 election and many of its members then joined the Liberal Reform Party. Electoral District Of Rozelle
Rozelle was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales, it was named after and including the Sydney suburb of Rozelle. It was created in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. It consisted of part of the abolished seat of Balmain South and part of Annandale.
